Welcome to the April-May 2011 short story contest. Would a mod please sticky?

Enough foreplay. No more chit-chat. No more leaning against the wall in quiet observation. Yeah, I'm talking to you, Ghostie. It's time to prep the photon cannons, sharpen axe blades, use the lockpicks for personal gain, engage in risky performance art, parry and thrust with a deadly rapier, load pulse rifle magazines, rev up the submersible / motorcycle / spaceship engines, take your pose on the stage as the curtain rises, throw spears at woolly mammoths, take out 38 goblins with one fireball spell, make the jump to light speed.

Get the idea?

The theme of the contest is Action!

No word limits. No genre limitations. Post your story as a new thread in the Stories subsection with a link posted in this thread.

Deadline is 11:59 p.m. London time on Sunday, May 22. At that point I'll put up a poll and voting will run through 11:59 p.m. London time on Tuesday, May 31.

You're here to write, so get writing.

I'm really going to have a crack this month... I'm afraid I didn't make it last month but action... so many ideas... looking forward to see what everyone puts together!

Oh dear. Well, I'll take a shot at it but I suspect this is not my month. :)

Oh oh oh oh oh.

I have an idea. I'm gonna re-vamp one of my flash fics. No one liked it the first go round, we'll see if I can fix it. It's got a lot of action and the idea was that the mc is taking action to right a wrong because no one else is. It's a pretty basic story. Now the key for me is to keep it basic and not include too much.

I can do this!

Oh boy - I already have an idea. Originally I was going to use it for a flash but it was just too big. I am excited. A good old fashioned military action story.

I'm not re-vamping a flash, but I am using a character from one who seems to fit in nicely.

This is perfect.

Mine will be a piece of back story for one of the main characters of my baby (WIP). Been meaning to write this for a long time.

Thanks for the excuse Ghost.
Jims.

Yeah, I've got a couple ideas from a couple back stories related to my own personal WIP. Since action is definitely my weak point, I'm looking forward to this in a masochistic sort of way.

Yeah, I've got a story idea I've been wanting to write that'll have the pace of a prison riot. Glad to see you scrapped the word limits again this month. I'll be needing plenty more than 5000 words for this one. . .

Hm, pure adrenaline-pumping action, eh?

I'm assuming there still needs to be a story in there somewhere, and not literally thousands of words of people juts pummeling each other? Although, that'd be neat, too. No characterization, no worrying about plot, just endless, mindless awesome...

The latter sounds good to me :)

Oh, baby ...!!!

I will have some fun with this one.

I think this time round we'll see more entries and some fun stuff going on. It will be interesting to see whether sci-fi or fantasy comes out on top.

It will be interesting to see whether sci-fi or fantasy comes out on top.

Just to clarify, note that I specifically indicated that there would be no genre limitations. If you want to write a story about British soldiers stationed in Afghanistan in April 2011, you can. If you want to write a story about a vicious high school musical, you can.

No word limit and I have two months? You're playing a dangerous game. Who wants to read a novella? 'Cos I think I'll have one.

I've got a different idea, an inspired idea. I hope it comes out as good as it is in my head. The only thing, it might turn into a novella too!! ARGH!!! No, I will focus focus focus and keep the thing under...8,000 words. That's be my self-imposed limit. Otherwise...

Write the story that you want. I'm reluctant to force anyone that has a great 10,000 word story to cut it down to 5,000 words just for the sake of a contest with no real prize. Readers, of course, don't have to keep reading if they don't like the story.

Meanwhile, I'm of a mind to give out some gold star stickers. The first one goes to Hereford Eye for being the first to submit (as usual). Two other gold star stickers will go to the authors with the highest word count and the highest body count. I think I'm going to be in the running for both. See, I got fricking space sharks with lasers attached to their heads, and they're blowing up entire galaxies!
