I like Minsc from Baldur's Gate. The big retarded fighter with his pet hamster. He always made me crack up.

Minsc from BG/BGII, Deekin from the Neverwinter Nights expansions and the Nameless One from Planescape: Torment.

Ah, and HK-47 from KotoR!

Oooh I fancied Bastila from KOTOR, what a babe!!! :D

Plus in NWN when you could get a foxy female character to take all there clothes off, brilliant fun making them run around in there underpants ...

Spoiler for Latter NWN expansion

The appearence of the fallen Aribeth in Undrentide, Gods above that black armour, considering how annoying she was at the start of the game. some transformation, vastly prefer the sexy evil blackguard ...

Masqurin from Shining Force III Scenerio 1!! Irene coming close second!!!

The best rpg character ever for me has to be Cloud Strife! He's strong and very cute ;) !!

Yuri from Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant
The Ring Spirit from Shadow Hearts: Covenant <-the most hilarious character I've ever seen in an RPG.
Auron from FFX. And come on, monty mike, you know that Cloud and Yuna are just terrible characters. At least terribly voice acted. Yuna's "yes" alone nearly ruined the entire game for me. Auron, however, with the "This is your story!" lines... gave me chills!

Really the moral of this story is PLAY SHADOW HEARTS COVENANT! It is the most criminally overlooked RPG in the history of video games! Not to mention the most laugh out loud funny game I've ever played, except for maybe Sam and Max Hit The Road.

And if you don't believe me, visit ffonline.com forums, go to the role playing adventures forum, and behold the Shadow Hearts Cult, a group of rabid gamers obsessed with SH1, SH2:C, and the upcoming SH3: The New World, I believe it is called.

I liked Auron, but only in comparison to the rest of the cast, as they were the worst rpg characters of all time. Yuna, Rikku, Tidus, Wakka, Seymour, Lulu... they were all awful, awful, awful.

HK-47 has my vote, though better in KOTR II for sheer sarcastic tones and humour...the lovable scamp!

Gordon Freeman, for me, has to be the best. Not a lot of options as his mission is pretty straight-forward, but he's pure righteousness (Offset only by the worst characters ever- the seemingly mindless citizens that follow him around at one point, supposedly to 'help' but ending up bimbling around and saying 'Sorry, Dr Freeman, I'll get out of your way.' and then blocking doors, crucial ammo containers, etc. I ended up using them as cannon fodder, I'm ashamed to say).

Fair enough, I know it seems strange to include what is, essentially, a first person shooter. I can't say enough good things about it as a game, though- including how it feels very much like RPG though it technically isn't. The characters therein are some of the best I have ever encountered, and the NPCs are amazing- Father Grigori in Ravenholm a prime example.

i agree the voice acting was terrible!! what happened to the good old fashioned speech boxes? final fantasy character ARE NOT supposed to talk is they cant put any feeling into their voices!!

anyway, my favourite rpgs characters are:
cloud - is so cool (especially in advent children),
zidane - is funny :) (FF9)
justin - is really silly (grandia)
Fayt (star ocean - till the end of time)

i know that this is an action game not an rpg but metal gear solid's 1 and 3
solid snake rules!!! i just had to include him he is so cool :D

Snake isn't too bright though. He never knows what anything means and he repeats every order he is given in the form of a question. It makes the game very comical, not to mention the way he says "Metal Gearrrrr!"

Am I the only one that DOESNT like Aeris? I honestly thought she was the most boring character in the game, and I was like *shrug* when she died. That's just me.

Oh. Right. The thread asked a question. About that...

I'm a big fan of most of the characters in the Suikoden series. I think they were all (for the most part) really well done.

Somehow I doubt Half-Life qualifies as an RPG...

Depends on your definition of RPG, I'd say. If you take it to mean "stats, non-linear gameplay, levelling up, being killed by rats", then no, Half Life doesn't fit into it at all.

If you take it to actually mean 'Role Playing Game', then I'd say Half Life 2 fits the bill perfectly. I've rarely felt so immersed in a game world - certainly not outside of the standard RPG genre. Valve seemed to take inspiration from the characters and deep world you tend to find in RPG games and applied that to the FPS gameplay template, resulting in a very pleasant result - FPS gameplay in a rich, RPG-style world.

As for RPG characters - I agree with HK-47, brilliant writing (at least in the first game). In fact, most of the character in KotOR1 were great, backed up by excellent voice acting. I'd also have to go for Jack from Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines. Great character, great voice.
