Lots of enticing points here. I love the main story of the protomolecule, and the creature attacking mars sounds interesting. I'm not a fan of politics so the whole mars vs earth vs opa thing is what makes me hesitate to pick this up.

And comparing it to Game of Thrones is a pretty tall order, but I guess I can see the comparison through the power struggles of the major nations.

Good review, it has described a book that's not for me. Ugh politics - my least favorite part of any novel. I put up with it in Martin's books because they are so good. I wanted to mention though that you dismiss hard scifi as a bad entry-level novel, but books like The Martian show that hard scifi doesn't have to be off-putting for new readers.

Good point, Phil. I haven't read The Martian, but it does seem to be hard SF with mass appeal.
