Daedalus is the tale of a starship that realises it's living in a simulation, escapes, and flees to Alpha Centauri. Rivals follow after it and Daedalus declares that it will decide who enters its territory and the circumstances in which they come. Unhappy with who humanity sends, Daedalus returns to Earth in disguise and hatches a scheme to save the world, and the universe, from itself. Then things get weird. Everything Daedalus knows, it knows from reading and watching science fiction, so its world-view is very strange, and not always aligned with reality.
More than anything Daedalus is a book about books, science fiction books mostly, and printed books and bookshops particularly. Books get used as portals, doorways, keys, handles, containers, and more. It's littered with cultural references and footnotes. Stylistically it's been compared to James Ellroy meets Peter F Hamilton, or to Banks who gets referenced a lot. It's deeply inspired, not just by Ulysses, but also by The Illuminatus! Trilogy, The Dancers at the End of Time, and Lilith's Brood.
There's sixteen chapters, numbered 00 to 0F, and each one is a song title. There are playlists on Apple Music and some early readers made matching playlists on Spotify and Tidal.
I've put the first 8 chapters online for free, it's available in most ebook readers, and the paperback is now in shops but you'd probably have to ask for it specifically.
Do you want to know more?
It's also got some very fun physics, some rather unique views on consciousness, and has a lot to say about how birds see the world.
Cheers Dave
