A place for anyone to chime in on news or things to say about the upcoming movie(s).

Forgive me if this exists, I could not find it on the first several pages.

IMDB

So I have a few comments and a couple questions.

1) Why is Roland black and Susan white(She's technically African). Susan is a sassy black woman and Roland gets railed on by her for being a honkey. What gives here? They gonna give up this dynamic completely?

2) I don't see Eddie in the character list. They are supposedly filming right now..... What are they filming? Is there a book that Eddie is not a part of? (I don't recall, but I don't think so)

3) How many movies? Do we know yet? What is this first movie? Is it Man in Black?

I also tacked this image up in another Dark Tower thread, but it seemed appropriate here as well.

This gives us an idea of how their interpretation of Roland will look. To me it looks like they will interpret the story however they want and it will be very loosely based upon the original material. No way they can shoe horn all the relevant content from all the books into one flick. The liberties they've taken with many of the characters and story elements have caused some controversy and outrage among fans. I'm willing to give it a chance (I like Idris Elba), but I'm not getting my hopes up in terms of the integrity of the story.

It started out as a Wizard and Glass discussion, but the conversation drifted a little when I mentioned the incoming film.

While I think casting Idris Elba in the role of Roland was...odd, to say the least, I LOVE watching him, so I'll likely watch this. But, as @Ghidorah said, I'm not expecting the story to stick to the books at all. I'm guessing they are just using The Dark Tower worldbuilding and will devise their own mythology and story lines.

I agree. Hopefully that tree ends up bearing future fruit that is more detailed and faithful to the books. I still hold out hope that it could end up as an HBO series someday with a director and cast that would do the Dark Tower the justice it deserves.

Well this is very different since the Book covers make it unmistakable The Gunslinger has long hair, and is a white man.

I'm looking forward to this epic fantasy action movie that will have on the big screen the nefarious ancient Villain the Infamous Randall Flagg.

I am super concerned they are going to free style this movie way too much and I will be disapointed and it has nothing to do with the casting. I really like Idris Elba. This is one of my faveourite all time series. SO scared!

I read somewhere that the film won't begin with the first book. They will start out someplace in the middle of the series. Not sure exactly what that will mean in terms of a coherent narrative. Maybe they plan to fill in some of the character history with flashbacks? We'll just have to wait and see.

My prediction is they use flashbacks.
I hope this is a faithful adaptation and not a lameass 1 that barely resembles the books.
There will be changes made but changes just for the sake of change, or because they don't give a damn about making it faithful is inexcusable.

Agreed, changing the story just to put a director's personal "signature" on it is usually a bad idea. A director's influence already extends to the choice of actors, cinematography, etc. They don't necessarily need to re write it.
I would be sad to see this join the list of failed King adaptations. All we can do is wait and hope. Once it comes out, I imagine the discussion thread for the film will be lengthy and thorough.

They can make faithful Harry Potter movies so there is no excuse for not getting the masterpiece series that is The Dark Tower mostly faithful.
It's best to get a director that gives a damn about making it faithful, and understands the source material to a high degree.
Your much more likely to get a faithful adaptation than well I just want to make this my version of the story while not caring at all that it is going to be very unfaithful.

You might want to look at this article:

It looks like they're going to dump all the books into a blender from what they say here. Apparently they thought all the Dark Tower material wasn't enough so they decided to dump in The Shining as well. I think they selected a good actor for their Man In Black (he was great in True Detective) but it will be interesting to see what they're final product turns out to be.

OMG - CHILLS!!!

I love the photo gallerys. I can't wait!!! :D :D

And, yeah, we'll probably all be disappointed by the story line. But I don't care! I think the actors they chose are great and I'm keeping the faith they'll do wonderful things with the characters. (I hope.)

I agree, N.E. The initial descriptions of what they planned made me cringe, especially with the involvement of Sony pictures. They're notorious for having studio execs ruin stories.
But when I saw some of the images they were showing, it gave me hope. What it comes down to is after all these years of waiting this is what we're getting, for better or worse. I am also keeping an open mind.

I hold out no hope for this movie.
You know, I'm kind of edging my way there, too, unfortunately.

I was bored this weekend and ended up on Netflix. I took a look at what they did to Terry Brooks' Shannara Chronicles. Oh, my word. It was TERRIBLE. It looked good, but that was about it. Definitely made for the MTV crowd. :( Made me think that The Dark Tower might end up in that territory as well.

I haven't seen anything directed by Nikolaj Arcel but I hope he doesn't take it in that kind of direction. The unfortunate fact is, as far as film/tv/streaming goes, this is all we've got after years of waiting. The reason I say unfortunate is because the story deserves room to expand (like my oft mentioned wish for a Netflix or HBO series). A single film will be a distillation. It obviously won't please some if not most fans but I'll try to approach it the way I approached the Marvel graphic novels. I kept an open mind, viewed it as inspired artistic interpretation and I enjoyed them. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.
