favorite space opera?

Glad you're liking them, Hobbit. I finished all the novels (haven't read the short stories) and am now in the Heris Serrano books. Enjoying them too. (OK, I'm a slow reader.)

Weber does tend to use the books as a bit of a platform, though, doesn't he? Still, some ideas I agree with, some I don't, but still, I don't really mind ideas (even those with which I disagree) and I really like the character, and the stories are fun. :-)
 
The Elisabeth Moon books are pretty good. I enjoyed them quite a lot. The style is similar to David Weber but with a bit more humor, I believe.

Another vote for the GAP series by Stephen Donaldson. The "Widowmaker" books by Mike Resnick are another good series.

I loved it, but I think you have to buy into the whole Captain Future Space Opera vibe. Loved the Coyote series, and Arkwright was one of my favourite books of that year, if not my favourite, balancing SF nostalgia with ideas for the future.

Haven't gotten around to reading Arkwright yet. On the TBR list, but still remains untouched as I seem to choose another book or series saying, "I'll get back to you, promise"...over and over.
 
The original poster back in 2001 suggested Bujold's Vorkosigan Series as the best and that may still stand up. Other posters came in with Bank's Culture Series, Cherryh's Alliance-Union novels (these tend to have different characters in the same universe), Weber's Honor Harrington Series and Elizabeth Moon's series (note that the Vatta series started in 2003 and thus was missed), which were all good suggestions. Michael McCollum's Antares Series wasn't mentioned but I am sure that psikeyhackr would have recommended it if he had seen the thread.

David Drake's RCN Series was first published in 1998 but hasn't been explicitly mentioned. Jack Cambell's Lost Fleet Series (and its many spin-offs) was first published in 2006. Bruce Bretthauer's Firestar Series was first published in 2012. Joel Shepherd's Spiral War Series was first published in 2015 and I am actually reading volume 9 (published in June 2024) at present without knowing if there are more to come. I am also reading through Eric Thomson's Siobhan Dunmoore Series.

Then there are "series" that might not be series or might not be space opera. Vernor Vinge's series starting with a Fire upon the Deep is certainly good. Charles Stross' Singularity Sky and Iron Sunrise are also worth reading.

Two series that I forgot that probably should qualify are John Scalzi's trilogy starting with "The Collapsing Empire" and Walter Jon Williams series starting with "The Praxis".
 
I think Larry Niven's Known Space stories are good examples of some of the more imaginative ideas from hard and epic science fiction mixed with space opera style adventure.
