Favourite reads this year [so far]

thanks...I am a big enough fan of theirs that i will give it a try..but probably not until i've read a couple other series that are waiting in my to read pile..

after last year's fionnavar series, I decided I like Guy Gavriel Kay so this year I dug into (in order of preference)

The Sarantine Mosaic
Tigana
The Lions of All-Rassan

I choose the reinvented Constantinople as my favorite as I found the plot a lot more solid than in the other two.

I hope the next GRRM appears soon, as I plan to re-read the first three books to refresh my memory and to wash away the taste of Goodkind and Jordan, who put me temporarily off extralong, unfinished series. that's also the reason I'm putting off digging into Erikson, as I understand the series is not yet complete

A mixed bag for me so far, I won't post the names of books I did not enjoy:

White Wolf ~ David Gemmell

The Swords of Night & Day ~ David Gemmell

The Scar ~ China Mieville

The Blade of Tyshalle ~ Stover

Veniss Underground ~ Jeff Vandermeer

The Twins ~ Gary Wassner

The best for me so far is a toss-up between Vandermeer & Mieville... Vandermeer for the alternating POV (third person, first person, second person), which made the 'read' in itself interesting, not to mention that he crams so much in for such a small book! I also really enjoyed the Scar, as I love the ocean and its creatures BEFORE China unleashes his imagination on it... it is also a huge leap forward from PSS, which I enjoyed very much anyway.

Half-way through Gary's sequel The Awakening and also getting my teeth into Vandermeer's City of Saints and Madmen, which is a complete contrast to Veniss... in that it takes many pages to paint not very much, but is enjoyable none the less. Chalk and Cheese are Wassner and Vandermeer... although both have dwarves :D
