Feist in Australia for book signings

Bought Feist's book and I waited till the end when the queue had disappeared to get him to sign it. I listened to him talking to his publicists and the Dymocks people whilst he signed some books for the shop.
Then I asked him how long he wrote for before he realised he was going to make it as an author. He gave me a fairly detailed answer about how he was a student when he wrote Magician. When he had written Silverthorn and Darkness at Sethanon, he was making enough just to pay the rent. Then his agent called him one day and said he'd made the bestseller list and he asked which one (eg. Locus). When she said the New York Times, he couldn't believe it. It had guaranteed an income to last 3 years, so he had to continue the success.
He told me you never know what's going to happen, his next book could be a flop (Talon's already no.6 he said, so I doubt it).
He rocks and he's a damn good speaker, not to mention being a nice guy.
