Only bit I recall was a solo space pilot rummaging through ancient space war debris in orbit around a planet. He had some kind of mental ability to zone into certain pieces, like rare metals? Not too sure.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help pinpoint this book! Cheers

Could be either of those. Any idea of a specific story? From memory the bit I remember from the story was at the beginning, no recollection of what happened after that.

Cheers Westly, I had a look through the summary on Wiki, the story sounds very interesting but has bits like "they have to resort first to cannibalism, and if that is not enough, to suicide", definitely would have remembered that. And also the one I'm looking for is from a single persons perspective (from memory anyway).

Did think about Alastair Reynolds' series that has pirates deepdiving for ancient relics, but not sure if it's old enough: Revenger.

Interesting but yeah, far too recent. Pretty sure I read the book in the late 90s or early 00s, and it could've come out decades before that.

I'd like to read it.:)

A little bit more information, most of the scifi books I've read were my dad's. I've asked him if he recalls it but no luck. He is a big fan of Iain Banks, has a lot of his scifi books. I'll have a look through those next time I visit. Does it sound like it'd be in the Iain Banks scifi style?

What immediately came to my mind was the Hooded Swan series.
Here is an extract from a Wikipedia entry on it. I have bolded a relevant point.

The series is set in the far future and possesses some of the features of space opera and planetary romance. It is narrated in the first person by the main character, Grainger, a well-known independent pilot. He is acerbic, sarcastic, and generally disagreeable on principle, attempting to keep himself isolated from others where possible. He serves as something as an unreliable narrator with respect to his own feelings and motivations.

To balance this out, Stableford uses the device of an alien symbiote, referred to as the wind, who is privy to all of Grainger's thoughts and wants to make him a better person. It also calls Grainger out on some of his self-deception.

Grainger is also privy to the wind's memories from times and places unknown to any other human - all of which he keeps to himself, though in several episodes it is clear that the information would have been highly appreciated by Grainger's employers.

Thanks for that, definitely sounds interesting! Doesn't ring any bells but will look a bit deeper into it. I do like the sound of the character so could be a series I get into

The author's first name may have been Sean or maybe Alastair Reynolds

Thanks for that, I had a look at the Alastair Reynolds books, sounds very similar to the style, I'll look deeper into that. Any more into about Sean? A well known scifi author?

I found it. Sean Williams-"Astropolis, Saturn Returns." Not sure if that's the book you are looking for but there you go.
