Gemmell Awards Nominees 2011

That'd be cool. Be sure to say 'Hi' if you make it!

Mark

LOL. Actually, you'd be about right there.... ;)

Mark

Good one, Eddy: Thanks for sharing those!

Brings it all back....

Nice to see Tom Lloyd nominated:)

I'm really enjoying his series. His first book tried to do to many things and failed. the rest are very good though IMO.
Another author that keeps getting better...

Agreed, I'm rather bullish on Lloyd and find his series rather undervalued. Lloyd is one of perhaps a dozen I have that are 'buy on release.'

Me too!

I was considering opening a thread on Lloyd. he seems to be invisible on the forum.

Actually, I think Tom's been a visitor here.....

Press Release: Gemmell Legend Awards, Friday 17th June 2011

At a glittering awards ceremony at The Magic Circle in London tonight, the winners of the third David Gemmell Legend Award were announced.

For the Morningstar Award for Best Newcomer, the winner was Darius Hinks for Warrior Priest (Black Library).

For the Ravenheart Award for Best Cover Artist, the winner was Olof Erla Einarsdottir for the cover of Power and Majesty by Tansy Rayner Roberts (Harper Collins Australia).

For the Legend Award for Best Novel, the winner was Brandon Sanderson for The Way of Kings (Gollancz/Tor US) who received the major Snaga Award.

The event was attended by fans, genre professionals and influential members of the fantasy/sf community, which included authors Stephen Deas, Barry Forshaw, Steven Jones, Kim Newman, Sarah Pinborough, Michael Marshall Smith and Chris Baker (illustrator of David Gemmell’s graphic novels), publisher Jo Fletcher, Ian Drury (of the Sheil Land Literary Agency) and representatives from Black Library, Bragelonne, Gollancz, Orbit Books, SFX Magazine, the BSFA, BFS/Fantasycon, Novacon, World Fantasy Convention 2013, the Birmingham Science Fiction Group and SF Crowsnest.

The event was hosted by event organisers Stan Nicholls and Anne Nicholls.
Last year’s Legend Award winner, Graham McNeill, presented the Legend Award. Artist Anne Sudworth presented the Ravenheart Award and author Juliet McKenna presented the Morningstar Award.

James Barclay read an excerpt from David Gemmell’s Shield of Thunder, and acted as auctioneer for the evening’s auction which was organised by Gillian Redfearn of Gollancz. Lots included a workshop with Jo Fletcher; a bundle of books by Jim Butcher; a cameo in Scott Lynch’s forthcoming novel The Thorn of Emberlain; a bottle of Legend Award champagne with two glasses; tickets for Gollancz’s 50th anniversary party; a chalet at the SFX Weekender; a framed print of the cover of The Rogue signed by Trudi Canavan; the DGA “lawn sign” autographed by authors and artists present on the night, and an original, signed, framed sketch of Druss the Legend by Didier Graffet!

Bragelonne Publishers produced a mini-Snaga for all Award nominees, and Simon Fearnhamm of Raven Armoury the large Snaga for the Legend Award winner.

Was a good event, though I say it myself!

Sanderson was really the only non-surprise there, although I must admit I was a bit unsure if he'd win due to the reception of WoK. Then again, the shortlist cut out novels like Corvus, which as far as I can remember had a really good reception, at least here.

Congratulations to all who won :)

I can't believe the Best Cover Artist was won for the Power and Majesty cover. It was the worst one of the bunch IMO.

I was thinking the exact same thing. It's a pretty stiff composition, and the figure isn't all that great.

The wining artist has an awesome name, though. ;)

I'd have thought Sullivan would have won. His work can be superb.

Pictures will follow!

One of the things that are fun about the Gemmells is that when you think you've worked the winner out, it doesn't happen!

There were about 1000 votes from all over the world in the Art category.

Must admit I'm as surprised as anyone on that one, but them's the votes. My personal favourites would have been Todd's or Jon's.

That sort of voting would likely explain why Sanderson won, too.

The Legend Award/Sanderson's was considerably more. Am just waiting for the official figures.

Looking forward to seeing some pics.
