Gemmell Awards Nominees 2011

The Legend Award/Sanderson's was considerably more. Am just waiting for the official figures.
Just seems very odd that something as moderately recieved as Sanderson's The Way of Kings won rather than something that might have deserved it more.

Mind you, a lot of awards seem to be like that.

Not here it wasn't: by far the favourite book of last year according to our poll, with more than double the points of its nearest rival. And that before the UK release, really (which was something like 30 December.)

The Way of Kings was more than moderately received. Not that the membership of SFFWorld is an indicator of the larger reading populace, but The Way of Kings was voted as SFFWorld's Favorite 2010 book. Of those shortlisted not named Robert Jordan, Sanderson does have the largest fanbase.
Here's the official shortlist:

Legend Award
For best fantasy novel

There are six short-listed titles this year as two were tied.

Peter V. Brett: The Desert Spear (Voyager)
Markus Heitz: War of the Dwarves (Orbit UK/US)
Robert Jordan & Brandon Sanderson: Towers of Midnight (Orbit UK/Tor US)
Pierre Pevel: The Alchemist in the Shadows (Gollancz)
Brandon Sanderson: The Way of Kings (Gollancz/Tor US)
Brent Weeks: The Black Prism (Orbit UK/US)
