Are his books available in Sweden? Just curious. :)

He wrote,

Wizards First Rule
Stone of Tears
Blood of the Fold
Temple of the Winds
Soul of the Fire
Faith of the Fallen
Pillars of Creation

and his latest work, still in hard cover...

NAKED EMPIRE

Yes, shan they're available in Swedish in Sweden and in Finland but they're not available in Finnish :(

Do you understand English well enough to read both translations? It must be interesting to be able to do so. Do you find they are very different when in a different language or are the translations good?

As a general rule, translations are often awful. Being from sweden myself, I've read a few (the Belgariad) and quickly jumped over to reading in english (I was 13 or so at the time). Since we start english in 4th grade (could be earlier now, I'm 24 so it was quite a while ago) Swedes in general have a great command of the language and should with no exceptions read books in english (if that is the original language (trickier otherwise). For that matter, always try to read books in the original language since stuff invariably get lost/changed in the translation (either intentionally or not).

That being said I haven't read TG in swedish so I can't comment on that particular translation. Nor have I read more than 5-10 books in swedish outside of school since I started reading in english at around 11 (with Agatha Christie novels).

And since fantasy has been, up until HP's recent success, pretty much overlooked as a genre the more talented translators have not been used.

Wow, Voland! That was a very informative post, thank you! You command of the language is indeed excellent! In fact, it's so good that I hadn't even noticed that it likely wasn't your first language.

As for the translations, I suppose I understand in a small way since some books I've read havebeen translated to English and just really sounded awful and I truely wished that I understood teh origional. The only other language I could probably read in is French, but even then I would have trouble.

NAKED EMPIRE eh.. what a great title!
I think I'll have to give that one a try.

Back to topic:
Oh, my I think I'm beginning to like "a sword of truth" it's been good so far, excellent plot, I'm just waiting for the next ones, maybe I'll try to get them as christmas-presents.

I've enjoyed reading this thread, it's good to see readers getting so passionate about authors and their work :). Brilliant!

I have read all the SOT series, so far but as yet not managed to get my teeth into Naken Empire (it's sitting in my to read pile)

I enjoyed the books up to Faith of the Fallen. That book did feel over done on the politic stakes, which was a shame, because that's not what I read fantasy for.

However, the Pillar of Creation was better, though I was disappointed with the lack of Richard and Kahlan (I really quite like these characters, I've gotten quite attached to them :) )

As for my general view on this series and Goodkind style. Well I kinda like this series. It's got enough going on to keep me interested. I like the characters, including Zed :) and well the magic and unusual creatures content up to Pillar of Creation was quite good. However, I did feel a little let down in those areas for the last two books and hope Naked Empire picks up more on magic etc.

In the end I dont mind if Goodkind keeps going with this series or starts a new one, I would still buy the book :)

rune

Lol, that's exactly where I am Rune! The last few books dissapointed me but I stilllike them enough, and Goodkind enough to buy anyhting else he puts out in the series. :)

I agree that Goodkind has fallen off after his first couple of books. The last one I read -Pillars of Creation- was ok, but if he wanted to write different characters than Richard and Kahlan (who I like) than why not write about Zedd and Nathan?(two characters that I think are the best thing about the series)

I haven't read Naked Empire, but he's obviously out of ideas and must fulfill his contract of a couple more books. I wish he planned ahead like Eddings does and have an outline of the entire story before he starts writing one word. Then we would be stuck with filler books before he gets to the end. There will be an end won't there?

Yes dear, two more books and he's done. Both of which, I think, shall contain the final fight for freedom from all corners of the world.

Who do you think is going to win?;)

Do you think Richard will kill Jagang or someone else? I would like to see Kahlan take him out since he obviously hates her with a passion (Pillars of Creation)

Do you think Richard will finally do some magic?

I think realistically Kahlan should expend all his power to save the outcome of some crucial battle, but of course only after giving birth to Ricahrds son/heir which is a male confessor/war wizzard with white and black magic... holy s**t!!! heh, and Ricahrd should die fighting Jagang but only after putting fear into the viles beasts eyes and sending him to the keepers clutch... or something like that... I just think both sides should loose, but essentially life and liberity shall win. :)

I hope Gratch comes back and kicks some butt.

Plus Chase and Rachel would be cool to see again too.

Well Chase and Rachel are in Naked Empire.... hope that didn't spoil anything! :)

They are!!!! Cool! Can't wait to read it.

Do you usually buy hardcover or paperback? Or do get your books from the library?

I'm usually a paperback guy. Mainly because of the money issue. Ican buy 3 paperbacks for the price of a hardcover. The bad thing is that I can hardly wait a year or two for the paperback to come out.

I buy paperback if it's out, but if not I'll go ahead and get the hardcover. They're more pretty anyway. :)
