I recently picked up,

Ender's game
American Gods
Perdido Street Station
The Scar
Ilium
George R.R. Martin - A Retrospective

I haven't started any of them yet, except the hedge Knight.

Mad spree!

I've bought -

a signed copy of Dan Simmon's Ilium - brilliant book! (Finally arrived!)
a signed copy of Lois McMaster Bujold's Paladin of Souls;

Julian May's Conqueror's Moon;
Lean Hearn's Grass for his Pillow;
a deluxe Leatherbound edition of The Lord of the Rings; (another copy! :))
Alastair Reynolds' Absolution Gap

from a recommendation in the Horror thread, Wagner and Wise's collection Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural;

and preordered:

signed Fools Fate;
signed Coalescent (Stephen Baxter SF);
signed (1410) Mary Gentle;
and George R.R. Martin - A Rretrospective (collectors edition).

That Internet's nothing but a bottomless money pit, don'tcha know! :D

Hobbit

I've ordered books two and three of the Book of Words trilogy from J V Jones. I'm reading book one now and it pretty good.

Holy moley thats alot of stuff. Was that all this month?
LOL....Not quite - Ilium was ordered back in July, it's just taken a while to arrive....some of the pre-release stuff isn't here until November or December, but mainly. I don't normally spend as much as that at the same time, but it's been a good month.

It's amazing how cheap things become if you look around a bit...

It's a bargain :D

Now it's finding time to read them.....

Hobbit

Frost, if Hobbit's anything like me, a few books on the "to read" shelf won't stop the buying. I have three full shelves of things I need to read, and I'm still buying.

I usually go against buying hardbacks, as it can usually provide you with 2 books instead of one, but i was just so tempted! there are some books that i just can't wait for, but i think i bought;

A song for Arbonne - GGK
Elfsorrow - James Barclay
House of Chains - Erikson
The Magus - John Fowles, which i've nearly finished
Baudalino - Umbeto Eco

and for my English lessons (of course there for school :rolleyes: )

Dracula - Bram Stoker
Frankenstien - Mark Shelly
Wuthering Heights - EmilyBronte
Othello - W. Shakespeare
The art of war - Sun Tzu
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde - Robert Louis Stevenson
The Canterbury Tales - Geoffrey Chaucer

I bought the last few just for the hell of it!

Thanks, Erf - you said it so succinctly.....yes, I'm still buying..... :D

Man, I have one small shelf of stuff I read, and the thing I'm reading is usually wherever I am. I hardly ever buy anything, but ASOIAF and Eragon have brought me back into the reading frenzy, however I'm pretty sure I'll never be as hardcore as you two.

LOL..... Thank you Frostmourne.....'Hobbit hardcore' has a nice ring to it, but also a certain meaning I don't want to go into on this forum! :D

I've accumulated thirty plus years worth of books...which I now realise, despite all the problems they've caused, is now probably a good idea, as I find that so many of them are out of print.... :mad:

Hobbit

Does anyone want to tell me whether The Scar is as good as Perdido????

I thought Perdido was OK, not great.
I thought The Scar was great.

But I've seen people say the opposite. I think we have reasonably similar tastes though, so ???

I should be rcving The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant omnibus from the SFBC any day. Also am planning on purchasing The Steerswoman's Road which looks interesting.

I'm anti-buying. I went on binges when I was working full-time, but now that I'm part-time, I have to cut back.

The other day I started counting unread books, and I stopped at 250. That didn't include a whole bookcase full of anthologies.

So, how does an addict quit cold turkey? As with any other addiction, you have to trick your brain.

Saying "I'm not buying more books for awhile" or "I can't buy" is negative. You think you're being deprived.

So I turned it around. "I am anti-buying." I'm doing something by not doing something.

It's worked for more than a week now.

But I'm thankful for the stuff that was pre-ordered. :)

Auntie Pam, that's brilliant. :) I'm finding that I consistently blow my budget on books (and other joys of life), and every now and then I curb my spending too (by becoming "anti-buying"). The longest I've lasted over the past two years is about three weeks without buying a book. Surely there is a clinical addiction at work here?

Valada, thank you. :) Three weeks is the longest you've lasted? Hmmmm. Well, that's something to be proud of - good job!

The other thing that helps is recognizing that (usually), the book will still be there six months or a year from now.

It's silly to spend $$ for a hardcover when it's first published, then let it sit unread for months and months. By the time I get to it, there will be nice secondhand copies available, or maybe even the paperback.

The only disadvantage is that while everyone else is reading and talking about it, you're left out, and a year from now when you're ready to discuss it, they will have moved on to something else.

That is so true AP, unless you are silly and collect like Hobbit (whose own collection shames my own) and I. I am still trying to figure out how to get in Hobbit's will! :)

I will buy hardbacks of books by authors I particularly like, or first books by authors that look promising or used 1st edition hardbacks of out of print books. But, my compulsive and obsessive book buying is absurd. I will walk into a used bookstore and walk out with several books I know I will never get around to reading. I buy them on the premise that I might someday read them or just because they were "cheap"! :rolleyes: If I had the money, my list would be much more like Hobbits! Thankfully, I stopped my e-bay buying...that was running into many hundreds of dollars a month.

On topic:

This Month I bought Illium and Paladin of Souls in Hardback and perhaps 5 paperbooks and a couple of books for my daughter.

I've heard of Illium, but what is Paladin of Souls?

I'm amassing a *huge* wish list for when the anti-buying is over. :)

LOL....I did say it was a larger spend than usual..... :)

Ilium is GREAT..... but SF.

Paladin of Souls is Lois McMaster Bujold's sequel to Curse of Chalion. John H (amongst others) reckon it's pretty good. Actually, John's comments were a lot more than that, which should tell you something. :)

My signed copy's just arrived from the States.

The thing about hardbacks is if you buy them early enough you can end up paying no more (or little more - couple of dollars/pounds) then the PB will, six months or so later. I like the solidity of HB - though some can leave you with very sore wrists.... :) HB's last!

I'm also now in the lucky position to buy signed copies, which I really appreciate - when I was younger, I used to look, but could never get or afford. (When I'm older, I'd tell myself....) The library was my saviour... :)

Now I get when I can (though usually not just because it's signed - it's one I would like anyway!). Biblio-holics of the world unite!

Don't waver, though, Pam - I'm impressed at your willpower and positive outlook!
