I just bought.....

I just bought Angel Seeker by Sharon Shinn and Irresistable Forces edited by Catherine Asaro. The latter because Ficus Fan kindly noted elsewhere that it has a Miles Vorkosigan tale in it, time to say goodbye to him properly methinks.

Have to wait a couple of weeks for them though, wonders of Amazon... neither are on the shelves of my local bookstores so I shouldn't really complain.

Also arrived, the Mary Gentle short story collection Cartomancy (with that recent Ash short story!) and a signed one that has come very recommended, The Year of Our War by Steph Swainston. First time novelist, but every review I've read has loved it, in a weird China Mieville sort of way (which might explain his somewhat glowing quote on the front cover).

And I'm really getting into Williams' The War of The Flowers now...

Interesting about the Swainston book. I have checked Amazon.uk, where there is little info, and I have sicced my local bookstore on it to find more details. Do you have the urls of any on-line reviews. I want to know what it is about (and if it comes in paper) before I import it.

Here's the easiest one to find, Ficus. I usually respect Ariel's reviews (and the rest on his website) a lot - they are thoughtful, honest and usually well considered.

This is the fullest - I'll have to dig up the others for you later!

Later: Here too from the Sf Site - another whose reviews I love.

and thirdly, here from Emerald City. I don't always agree with Cheryl's reviews (she hates Curse of Chalion for example!) but they're always a good read.

I'm just back from a holiday in Florida and I had a great time. An additional bonus was that books cost about half as much over there. I managed to pick up a couple of novels which aren't available where I live.
Blade of Tyshelle
Kushiel's Avatar
The Year's Best Horror and Fantasy
First book of Anne Bishop's first trilogy
And some others that I can't think of off the top of my jet lagged head. One problem, I couldn't find Heroes Die anywhere. Can omeone tell me if you need to have read it to read the second one. Do I need to import it or can I get along without Heroes Die?

No, you don't have to read HD first, I did it accidentally and it was fine, but I would recommend reading HD first, gives more perspective.

Thanks Hobbit. It does look interesting, so I have just placed an order and will get it, even though it is still in HC.

I have bought them from amazon - I am in the UK so I should think you can do the same. I do think you should read Heroes Die first as Blade of Tyshalle is most definitely a sequel with the same characters not long after the first books events. It would be confusing otherwise....

PS - can someone tell me how to quote a previous post? I still don't know how to do it!

The latest books I found:

Echo and Narcissus TP, by Mark Siegel
Sappho's Leap TP, by Erica Jong
A Noble Radiance & Uniform Justice PB, Donna Leon

The Dream of Scipio HC (remaindered) by Ian Pears
Pirate Hunter TP, Richard Zacks
Guns, Germs and Steel TP, Jared Diamond

I figured this week I would stop in at the used book store and see what's there! I picked up "Blood Trillium" by Julian May. I didn't have it in HC, and now I have the lot(5) in HC.

Also picked up "The Stone and The Flute" by Hans Bemmann.I have never heard of this, but looks good! Anybody heard of this???

I picked up Limbo by Andy Secombe and The Etched City by K.J. Bishop last night.

I've been thinking about ordering Bishop online for quite sometime but was trying to resist the temptation of doing an online haul (I would've spent way too much money), so I was very happy to see the book at my local store.

I'm amazed it took so long for me to find it in a bricks and mortar though - the author's Australian!!!

I just bought Lions Blood by Steven Barnes. It was on sale for £6.99 in HB, which is quite a bargain. I feel a bit silly posting this straight after FicusFan. I should have titled this 'books I could afford but were low on my list of priorities but I could justify buying as a genuine bargain'.There were several books I didn't buy but really wanted :(

It was a good day today!

I picked up:

The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold

Legends II edited by Robert Silverberg

The Gilded Chain by Dave Duncan

Lord of the Fire Lands by Dave Duncan

Here's what I picked up recently:
"Guns of the South" by Harry Turtledove
"The Talisman" by Stephen King & Peter Straub
"The Best of H.P Lovecraft: Tales of Horror and the Macabre"
"The Dream Cycle of H.P Lovecraft: Dreams of Terror & Death"
"The Transition of H.P. Lovecraft: The Road to Madness"

By the way, the cover art to those Lovecraft tpbs are very awesome indeed, but does anyone here beside me think that they're kind of schizophrenic-looking? :D

Don't feel bad Leiali :(
I just happen to buy mine in big chunks, instead of one or two at a time. It is because of my list of books published by month. I know when they will be published in PB and I am wating for them at the local bookstore :D. In fact sometimes I make them go and get them from the stockroom, because their computers say the books are on hand but they are not on the shelves yet.

That said I did get The Darkness That Comes Before PB, by R. Scott Bakker. It was an order from Amazon.CA that I had shipped to me when I found out that the book is going to be published here in HC first. I refuse to wait another year after that for the PB.

Most recent Fantasy acquisitions:

The Briar King-G. Keyes
The Initiate Brother-S. Russell
Mythago Wood-R. Holdstock
The Healthy Dead-S. Erikson (not yet delivered).
The Bulfinch mythology-T. Bulfinch

And bought The Princes of Ireland by E. Rutherfurd for my monthly dose of excellent historicals as well as The Distant Mirror by B. Tuchman, one of the world's most renowned popular history books which supposedly reads a lot like a novel.

I'd be interested to know what think about that one, Mith. Wouldn't think many round here would know it - but I could be wrong!

-------

"The Best of H.P Lovecraft: Tales of Horror and the Macabre"
"The Dream Cycle of H.P Lovecraft: Dreams of Terror & Death"
"The Transition of H.P. Lovecraft: The Road to Madness"

Zsinj, I thought they were surrealistic, rather than schizophrenic.
(BTW: tried to paste a copy of one of the covers here - found out I have have no idea of how to do this.)

John,

I couldn't even get hits on Amazon for Collier Talmadge, Mercer Gray and Tait Cantrell. Where did you buy these from?

Julian

I will post about it when I've read some chunks; it's a huge book (800 plus) but the diversity of myths in here already makes me anticipate it greatly.
