And frankly, there aren't any really good superheroes in the mainstream for exactly the reasons I gave. But then again, some of us are adults and expect more than steroid-stuffed idiots slugging it out in the streets.

Lighten up amoeba-brain. If your looking for more adult alternatives than you shouldn't be posting in a thread about super-heroes in the first damn place.
 
So Kahn... tell me, has their been any good barbaric superheroes? If not, then your my favourite. ;)

Slaine MacRoth (my avatar) from 2000AD was a serious maniac who would warp into almost demonic form if you pissed him off.
King Kull of Atlantis was sort of like an ancestor of Conan's, although I don't think they were related.
There was a character called "The Warlord" too a 20th century space pilot who crash landed in a forgotten world which included dinosaurs, magicians, shape-shifters and a lasers and flying ships, which was a very wierd, but good, fantasy- SF cross-over story.
Thats's all I can remember for the moment.

Ah, because OBVIOUSLY superheroes are only for little kids, is that it? Damn, better tell Marvel and DC to get rid of their adult lines, huh?
 
Why don't you both just be adult about this and give up the childish strain that this thread seems about to take on? Personal insults are beneath everyone in this forum. If you have an arguement, make it based on facts or opinions about the subject, not about the person.

Now, back to the thread. I've always enjoyed Wolverine as a superhero, but he's gotten a little hard to figure out exactly who he is by now, which shouldn't be happening.

I don't like Captain America or Superman. Both for the same reasons. They were invincible people who were never in serious trouble when fighting the bad guy. And the whole "fighting for truth, justice and the American Way" is just way to cliched.

As for supervillans. Magneto is cool, so is Venom. I always liked the bad guy of the Silversurfer comics, can't remember the name right now.
 
For the Aussies here, Ryan Kwanten might be playing Superman in the new movie. With his body, he'll look more like Dean Cain than Christopher Reeves or the guy in Smallville.

I agree with you and apologize if I offended anyone. However, the facts are clear. 60-70% of Marvel and DC's reading audience today is over the age of 18. Both Marvel and DC have extensive adult lines of comics that are extremely successful. Marvel's regular line has been for an increasingly adult audience since the mid-90s. Marvel President Bill Jemas states emphatically that Marvel doesn't make comics for kids (although there will be a line for younger audiences released in TPB format through bookstores later this year, but it will have nothing to do with the normal Marvel Universe).

Comic superheroes have, over the past 20 years, gone beyond their humble beginnings. Superheroes are not a simple morality play anymore, and those books which keep that stigma (Superman mostly) have extremely poor sales ratings. The comics that routinely sell well are those in which the characters are not good for the sake of being good or bad for the sake of being bad, but have well-defined reasons for thinking and feeling the way they do.

Them's the facts.

I think he was called "Galactus" or something like like.

My original comments were in an attempt to make Cephus join in the discussion rather than just pour scorn on it, but I guess it was a waste of time.

The stretchy bloke that led the Fantastic 4.

your at a senese of nirvanic reastfulness lying on the sofa watching TV and Graham Norton comes on and you think "no problem, channel changer" but it has no batteries and you can't quite reach the TV...

Yes, Silver Surfer was the herald of Galactus, who has since died, but this being the Marvel Universe, who knows how long that will last.

I'm not pouring scorn on it, I'm disagreeing. There is a difference. Any opinion, belief or position that cannot take being challenged isn't very worthwhile, is it?

Superheros are very two-dimensional and very unrealistic. To some degree, that's to be expected, they do have super powers, etc. But if they act so far beyond the human experience, then we cannot relate and they lose their ability to really influence and teach the reader anything of import other than *WHAM* *BANG*.
 
I read an Incredible Hulk comic with a good twist. Basically he's the last guy in the world, and he keeps getting eaten alive by these super-evolved cockroaches, cockroaches and the Hulk being the only things to survive so long after the whatever nuclear war happened.

Anyways, the neat twist was that about half way through they presented the Hulk as a metaphor for Prometheus.
 
How does that work? Stealing fire vs last thing alive? Hmmmmmm. Hulk is about to get his freak on with Abomination in the current arc which is cool because they have some awesome fights.

I read a lot of Marvel and DC when I was younger, and 2000ad as I got a bit older (not really for kids with the amount of sex, blood and gore in them), but I don't really read any now. I just fell out of the habit, but have fond memories of them.

I liked the "What if" series and the cross-overs they occasionally did like Superman meets Spiderman etc.
 
The last thing alive bit was the punishment portion of the Prometheus tale.

Basically, fire was nuclear fire (since Banner was a nuclear physicist or whatever), he pursued it for people who were undeserving, and then when everything went to hell, his punishment was be consumed alive over and over again (crows replaced by giant cockroaches) while stuck to a rock (what was left of the earth by then)

Okay then I'll change my vote I would hate to be considered plain and common, only have'n a couple of dimentions after all anybody who has seen my waist line knows this isn't the case...
