I was just wondering has anyone one else here read this book (which is free as an ebook on Amazon Prime?) and I could best describe as dark fantasy with some sci fi overtones, though that is not particularly a genre I read.

Its one book of the last few years that I read which leaves a most lasting impression with me, and too be honest one of the best books I ever read. I will never ever forget it. My wife loved it too and she really does not read sci-fi or fantasy at all apart from the occasional book I persuade her to read

So is it just me who was blown away by this one? And the missus. Sorry I can't seem to get the forum search option working to see if this book has already been discussed

Typical amazon review
5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most enjoyable books I've ever read
I cannot remember the last time a book kept me up through the night, just because I had to read it.

This wonderfully crafted, and creatively written book has everything going for it. A beautiful blend of genres—science fiction, horror, drama and romance—offset nicely by humour I found so natural, making this book feel like home.

Aside from the compelling nature of the writing, there was another reason I just had to keep reading; I had no idea how the story would unfold. Within this book is a reality which touches so many others, all so similar yet different in a fractional way, and the possibilities are infinite.

I don’t want to say too much about this remarkable creation, but if you enjoy books which are different—ones that make you smile and cry, laugh and wonder; which bring you to ask questions of yourself which you mightn’t have considered otherwise—then I highly recommended you buy yourself a copy, and go and read this. Right now. You can thank me later.

I've never heard of this book before, but your enthusiasm (and other reviews) is enough for me to check out at least.

@Westy -then I recommend don't read any more reviews (may find some spoilers) just try it :-) I thought I knew where this story was going - until it wasn't. I really can't compare this to anything else I ever read, it's very hard to categorize. . I read it on kindle unlimited (trial) for free.

It would be good to hear your impressions too.

This sounds really intriguing. Your passion and a quick peek at ‘look inside’ have won me over. Now sitting on my kindle waiting to be read

@seaserpent
I really hope you enjoy it... but go on and read and then come back with an honest opinion, is this really something miles apart from anything you read before, and did you guess where it was going. Or is it just me?

I know you are convinced to try it already but this is a another review from goodreads

'Okay, so there are books where you can predict the plot, and there are books that pull the rug out from under your feet. And then there is this book.'

Just about sums it up.

PS IS that Mount Teide on your avatar?.

I shall do.

out of interest how did you come across this author?

And no, it’s New Zealand. it’s the volcano they used for Mount Doom in the LOTR films

I found a book called The Stone Man by the same author, just by searching for 'Sci-Fi Horror' on Amazon and browsing the results. It was free on Kindle Unlimited so I read that and enjoyed it. At the end was the fist part of 'In The Darkness'. I read that and was grabbed straight away so I then immediately downloaded and read the book. Again on Kindle Unlimited for free.

I enjoyed that one so much I later read most of his other books (mainly novellas and short stories) but IMHO non of them, including The Stone Man compared to this one.

That looks so much like Mount Teide it is uncanny

I'm living in the south of Gran Canaria, been here nearly four years now - I'm a 'Brexile',

Mount Teide on Tenerife can be viewd from many places on Gran Canaria.

You’re right - they do look very similar! My daughter took the picture when she was backpacking last year (good job she didn’t leave it a year)

I’ve never been to the Canary Islands but they sound lovely - congratulations on your escape
