Critiques

Hi Bonnie,

I've watched California's blues over the climate changes. I'm writing a novel about an old professor who tries to change global warming by using accurately placed explosive charges to alter the flow of magma, thus the planet's magnetic field. It's mostly a horror story embedded within a mystery and a submarine chase with a surprise ending. In that, I'd like to get some critique. I give critique as well. I'm not a shreditor, instead doing more beta read critique. I'm honest, but do my best to be constructive. Sometimes a very skilled writer will produce mediocre work. It's toughest for the newbie to take critique. Some cry. Some lash out. Like any other artist, we pay the dues of endurance.

I'll see if I can find that forum category.

Hey, Dr. C -

That's an interesting perspective. BTW, if you want to check it out, my sci fi novel is up on Amazon. I THINK we're allowed to post links here, so:
http://www.amazon.com/Home-World-Bo...1&sr=1-1&keywords=Home+World+by+Bonnie+Milani

I'm told there's a short version of the link but never have been able to figure it out.

Parsing

I'm told there's a short version of the link but never have been able to figure it out.

It's a computer programmer's convention, that relates back to math, called "parsing." It treats the dots like parts of a file, then adds them back into the URL when the left click is made.

Do you have some of it here?

Hi to all

Hi, I am a an activist for human and animal rights and am doing my own research into health. I have written a book about shamanic travels into the Otherworlds but I haven't ventured to publish it yet. I am doing a fair bit of writing on my blogs on health issues and how to resolve them by one's self. As they involve toxic relationships and a lot of intrigue and crisis for the individual, I thought that they could be written as a novel. I don't know what genre to put them in and I want to learn more about writing. While the issues could be classed as horror, the solutions are enlightening and aquiring for the person a great deal of personal power. So I hope to learn enough to write a good novel for each one. Kyrani

Welcome, Kyrani!

We generally stick to genre writing and our discussions to focus on the Fantasy and Science Fiction end of things, but there are a few horror writers and readers handing around. You may want check out the Fantasy/Horror forum and see what folks are reading (I'm rather afraid not too much of what you described). And there is, of course, the Writing forum where a group of us get together to share our work and talk shop.

Glad you have you on board. :)

Hi Kyrani,

Having some reading in Shamanism, including the Austrailian "Black Fellahs" dreamtime, I could envision some decent fantasy works in that area. Someone mentioned earlier about Minority Report. The shaman would seem to fall in line with precognitive knowing.

Welcome.

Hello Michael!

Welcome to the forum. That's a great goal to have as a writer. I too would like to see people of color represented fully in genre fiction.

I'm afraid I'll have to edit out the book links you included in your post. However, please post the links and your book blurb in the Promotion Zone. You can start a new thread there and self-promote by keeping us abreast of sales or positive reviews all you want in that forum only.

Good luck and I hope we see you around the forum. :)

New member and the nuclear bomb

Hi everyone, my name is Micah Ackerman, I've been lurking for quite a while and I finally decided to join up.

I am a Sci-Fi and Horror writer from Connecticut(USA) and I write mostly contemporary Sci-Fi and Horror. I like putting everyday characters who live in our world into horrifying and strange predicaments. My first novel Wormwood is due out soon and it's about a full scale nuclear war and one man's plight to save his small town. I also write short stories and i have a Podcast about Sci Fi that is also coming soon (March). The Podcast is called The Megapods. I hope to be a regular contributor here and I can't wait to get involved in the discussions.

Thanks everyone

Micah

Hello!

Hi, my name is Brad! I'm a big fan of scifi and fantasy, and have just started writing in the genres too! I have self published my first book, a novella, last week and am already looking forward to my next project; my first novel.

I've never wanted anything more in life to be able to write stories and tell them to as many people as possible, so I am determined to make it to a point where I can do this for a full time living. I really enjoy speaking with other writers and fans of the scifi and fantasy genres, and I really hope to learn a lot from the people here. From my short time here, I am very impressed with the work ethic of some here and hope to emulate that!

:)

Hello...

Hi there. I've been lurking for a few months on and off and it looks like you have a really good community here so I've made the plunge and signed up!

My names Kev and I live in England, roughly halfway between Birmingham and London. I'm a big fan of reading in general. I like most genres, but obviously love some science fiction and fantasy. My favourite genre authors are P.K Dick, Iain M. Banks, Sir Terry Pratchett, George R.R Martin and Stephen King.

Looking to contribute to various threads and hope to obtain some good recommendations on the way!

Cheers!

Howdy, fellow newbies!

Hi, Guys!

glad to see some other newbies on here! I just joined a few months ago but haven't yet managed the time to really learn the ropes. From what I've seen, though, this really is a vibrant, exciting forum so I'm thrilled to know someone else out there is in the boat with me.

Best,
Bonnie Milani

PS - Terry Pratchett: YES!

Hi, VanDammeFriday (VDF?),

I've found those here who do critique are gentle and helpful. Certainly it's a bit more GP, so seems to strive for eloquence. A bit higher quality, while helping others learn. Have fun.

Hi Bonnie,

I think we chortled a bit earlier. I like the site, too. Up beat, but not down wind of the cesspool.

Hi, I am a longtime science fiction, fantasy and horror reader and fan.
I primarily came here because I am searching for reading recommendations from my peers although I might jump into an occasional discussion.
.

Greetings! I'm Jade, in my mid 20's, and sadly I've have spent most of my life avoiding reading and books like the plague! However, due to some recent life changing events, that has all changed. I've developed what seems to be an insatiable hunger for knowledge, specifically in book format. Yet though I've become an avaricious reader, I am basically new to the world of books!

An online friend of mine introduced me to a website known as GoodReads last summer and I am obsessed with it! I love that I can keep track of all the books I've read, want to read, favorites and create various groups/shelves! I've joined this forum because I love reading, wish to discuss the books I read, why I liked or didn't like them, and also find/be given recommendations. I am in awe at how many books exists and one of my life goals is to read as much as I possibly can :P

Hi.

I'm Tinman1711. I'm 57 and I live in the UK.
I was a member of a similar website some years ago and found the critiques I got from one of my stories really, really helpful. It made me realise
that I have a horrible habit of assuming that other people know what I'm thinking, initially with my writing but then with life in general. The particular story subsequently underwent a re-write and became much, much longer.
Anyhow, I'm hoping that being a member of this website will be just as useful, both for some critiques and for sharing thoughts with like-minded
people.
Bye for now,
Tinman1711

Hi. My name is Jeff and I live in Texas. I have been reading and watching horror, science fiction and fantasy as long as I can remember. I write stories occasionally, all three genres. My favorite authors in the field of Science Fiction are HG Wells and Isaac Asimov, in the field of Horror are HP Lovecraft and Stephen King.

Hi, Guys.

I haven't joined a general Sci-Fi discussion forum before.
But I need ideas on any new books I can read. I prefer fantasy.
