Dipping a toe...

Having been pointed this way by Leiali and shown around some of the threads on a daily basis, I thought it was about time I finally got round to registering and saying a proper 'hello'.

I'm particularly looking forward to taking part in discussions in the Writing forum, and hope that it will help to encourage me to continue working on my own first novel that has currently stalled slightly. Fingers crossed!

Hi,
This forum was mentioned and recommended on another forum I'm a member of, so thought I'd pop on over - my it's a big one isn't it!! I recognise a few of the members names from the other forum.
I'm currently living near Peterborough in the East of England (the flat wet bit of the country) and have been reading both SF and Fantasy for nigh on 25 years after reading Bradbury's 'A Sound of Thunder' at school.
Still retain huge affection for the Weird Tales triumvirate of Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, though my favourite authors of the moment are all Canadian - Guy Gavriel Kay, R. Scott Bakker and Steven Erikson.
Also interested in most History (especially Central Asian), Art, Comics, the Modesty Blaise novels of Peter O'Donnell, the music of Lisa Gerrard and Dead Can Dance, Japanese percussion music - a varied range of interests hopefully, who wants to have just one sole interest in life?
Hope to get involved in some good discussions and pick up some recommendations along the way.

New here

So I recently decided to write a novel, and have cranked out just under 65,000 words so far. The first 30,000 I finished in about a week, which made me realize you can't write a book in a week, hehe. The rest I have done in about the last two weeks. I do notice the words come less and less the more you write though.
A friend of mine gave me a link to this site when he realized I was actually serious about writing a novel, and I have looked at it at times, wondering what I am getting myself into. The whole site is filled with lots of info, etc. Yet the whole publishing industry seems scary to me. The idea of being turned down scares anyone though, which coming here now, makes me feel better. I'm glad there are lots of ME's out there. It's a security against the feeling of being rebounded alone.
I would hope that my novel makes the grade when its done, which will be soon I hope, the chosen words being neatly packaged off to a publisher. Yet knowing there are so many who have tried before me, typing upon this very forum, it won't feel so bad if it hits their trash can with a loud BANG!

Threads are entirely up to you. If you enjoy the Pellinor books then I'm sure many will be able to recommend similar works - so don't be afraid to ask around :)

If you're feeling slightly lost you can always lurk for a while and then jump in when you're ready - it's up to you. Either way, welcome in :D

This undertow of my conscious mind awakes me from my sleep. The darkness opens up around me in small pinholes of light, like thousands of tiny, white eyes peering into my chamber of rest.

I arise and walk over to a small alcove in the stone wall and dim the lamp to it's lowest glow; a lamp that has been providing light, warmth, and healing for the past 2112 years. You can still see through your hand, I think to myself, as I pull my arm away from it's task.

Looking into my thoughts, I search for the last few images and instances that sent me here. I find an image of my Queen being taken away from a large room, and I on my knees, the reflection of my stubble on the narrow blade in my lower peripheral.

I seem to have kept the top point of my body, but the rest is dark, for now. I walk back across the room and look into my chest at the foot of the bed. Gold, clothing, and my sword.

After gathering my three belongings, I turn around and finally stare at the door. Yes, I remember the other side now; I remember having to be pulled into this room by others. As I approach this side, I notice the two pillars on each side of the door. Earth and sky. Sword and stone.

This awakening is much different than my others. I feel my daughter has been born, for the first time. But, that would mean...

Hello! I stumbled across this forum whilst trying to find some literature to move on to after finishing the current book.

It's really nice round here - so many like-minded people!

It can get a bit lonely when you have yourself and your books, and not many people around you can think further than what they are going to have for lunch!

I guess reading Fantasy and Sci-fi help greatly with writing music - it exercises your imagination, stretches your mind, and (depending on the genre) encourages wit and thinking outside the box.

I hope I can be of some use to this amazing cave of knowellege, at least in part, to what it has taught me already.

:)

Did I say "Hi" when I registered? Looks like I didn't...

Hello!

My hubby is a natural when it comes to meeting new people, which is why he's been involved in this forum already for some time (see: Malibu). I'll probably lurk for a while before I delve into sharing my opinions, too!

I've been learning and growing since I first embarked on this adventure called "getting published". My husband is an amazing supporter and my biggest fan.

I have poetry and short stories going out into the great wide world, wagging their tails and following publishers around, hoping for that fateful day when they find a home ("Mom, can I keep it?"). But my greatest focus is my fantasy novel, Redheart, and the search continues for that one, special, forever house it can call its own.

Sometimes I wonder if it will come down to a handpainted sign on a lawnchair outside Wal-mart reading, "Free to good home."

But I'm not there yet. :)

Good to see you've 'crossed over', Jackie, and feel free to join in when you feel you can....

..as indeed, hello and the same to all those who are new since last time I said 'Hi'. (Hadn't realised how long it's been! :o )

Hope you'll all enjoy your stay, add your voice to the many; I'm always impressed to see what a talented and enthusiastic lot we have here.

(Ickle... I want to know ALL the details....... :D )
