Invitation Anthology 2021 Q1 (Setup)

Just finished The Creation. Found it great! Deeper than it initially seems with all those literary echos and implications. Exciting and fun too. Can't get too much more Gothic. Slick too how you merged in modern elements, and keep the Gothic feel in tact. Going to re-read the other two, did you make substantial edits from originally linked versions?

To the group
: I guess I will begin to put my stories up for critique by appending "Critique Requested " to the titles. Would really love it if someone would join me? I don't want to appear like I'm hogging.

I have no idea how many responses we will get or by whom. It's a crap shoot. I am taking my critiques in PM initially to make sure I get independent, uninfluenced comments. After I get as many as I'm likely to get, I will paste them all in the thread. It's a good system, but whatever works for you. Anyone? Please let me know, so I can put up some of my stories.

Yes I did!

I got quite a bit of feedback on the first version of all these stories, so only critique if you have the time and inclination. I will beta as many as I can fit into my spare time, feel free to tag me as I don't always notice things going onto the forum

Thanks for response. Look forward to reading new versions. If you're pretty much good on these version, so much the better. I found The Creation pretty polished.

Exciting, because we might have our text together relatively soon. :-)

RJ, Sea, Hoodwink? Want to put up a couple stories for critique?

Not entirely sure the pinging function "@[name]" is working on the site, at least for me. But will find a way to keep you apprised.

I have yet to decide on a selection that can be grouped together under a linking theme and also meet the looser category of "dark". And I have to find the time for editing and polish. Hopefully I will resolve this in the next week!

Np, Hoodwink, as of now, there's plenty of time. Progress report on Feb 20, just to see where we are all at.

Let me know of any interest in getting critiques from the "Workshop" folks. It could apply to any stories, even if you're not sure yet you want to use them this time. Critiques are optional (like almost everything is, lol) I guess if no one else is keen on this, I might go for it regardless. I'm not wild about substantially re-writing my stories, but if there are any "quick fixes" to improve them, I'm open to it.

To All:
Remember, any stories that you like, but that don't fit the constraints/grouping, etc. will be great in Issue 2!

Hey All, How's it going? Can you shoot me a quick status on your stories? Have narrowed it to five, have no idea, have your three chosen, etc..?

Also, is anyone one else thinking of getting critiques here in the workshop thread? So far, I have no takers. :) Hannah, I believe is closest to a final submission. Please let me know if you're going to do critiques at all.

Also should advise, there are some questions about how much tie-in, etc. we can do with SFF World... If we use the name, etc. But we can also go "indie", and drop the connection to SFF World. We'll need to have a disclaimer that says we're not affiliated with the site (legal, etc.) In that case why are we even called "SFF Word Forumite Fiction"? lol We might consider a new schtick, lmk thoughts.

I intended to read through all the stories submitted and so some cursory feedback but I don't have time for line editing or deep feedback I'm afraid.

Oh, thanks! That would be great Hannah, and I think just what's in order. Question is, who has decided on their lineup and order already? Sea, Hoodwink, R.J.? I will post my line up soon too, but I want to get feed back also first... chicken\egg problem. Let's hear from the group and get a status.

And here's my selection. After life. I've polished what I can up to the horizon of authorial blindness, so feedback welcome as always.
Thanks! Didn't see this at first for some reason. Now, when you get a chance, address the questions still unanswered above. Do you feel pretty sure this is what you'd like to have in there? (aside from possible minor/major(?) edits)

Here are mine - Tales of Deception. Comments welcome.
Opps, I think I missed this one two! What the hec? Sorry, Sea. Thanks for the stories. Now we just need mine and RJ's!!

Exciting :-) We are very close to having a first draft of our antho! Then we can take a look at what we got and make various next step decisions from there. :-)

@R.J. ?? Yoo hoo? No RL allowed! lol :-)

1. Yep.
2. No, but I might swap out the last entry for this months Flash Fic entry depending on how it does.
3. Definitely.
4. Really depends on the scope of suggested changes.
5. All these entries have been flash-fic entries at one time or another so received at least some cursory feedback at the time, but I always want to improve them.
6. If the owner of SFF world wants to be associated with the anthology and it does not cause the owner (or the moderators) any issues, I would be delighted for the publication to be associated with this site and perfectly happy to sign any disclaimers that ease that path. The anthology is exposure for me personally, but hopefully a bit of free brand advertising for a site that's been a welcoming home for all of us. There's no 'Hoodwink' without SFFWorld - my writing is so much better than it would be without my long but sporadic association with the forums here. It'd be nice to give them due credit.
(Obviously, the reverse is true too - if publication does cause complication and removing the association makes it better for SFFWorld, then I'm happy with that route too)

1. Yes, I reckon I'm happy with my lineup
2. Yes
3. Unlikely
4. Yes
5. Yes
6. Yes, already am.
7. What @Hoodwink said :)

Thanks, Sea!

I'm taking one last crack at proposing a real collaboration with SSF World on the antho, but rather doubt they will take it.

Seems more likely we will want to (unfortunately) nix the connection with the site -so we need a new name for the antho. We could potentially use the name I had, but we need a disclaimer in the antho that we are not affiliated. So that kind of defeats the purpose in having that name, right?

Ideas welcome :)

Without a "publisher", we are actually self-publishing, just as a group. Self-published perhaps is not the greatest "look", since it means the works are not currated, but that's the path we have chosen.

Was hoping to do a hybrid perhaps with SFF World -- we choose stories and provide alternates, then editors make best possible antho out of the material we give them-- working with us, of course. But I think it' unlikely they'll take us up on it because it involves some extra work on their side. :-) Will let you know when I get a response from KatG.

Failing that, I think we need a new name and perhaps a hint of some unifying concept for he antho. Thoughts? :-)

Feb. 20 CHECK IN

Sorry for being late. I have finished revising one story, almost done with the second and third, but am struggling with the fourth. One critique this story got was that most of it is written as the POV narrating what has happened instead of experiencing the story in "real time". I find it super hard to convert the story although I agree with the critique. So either I'm gonna have to ignore it, or spend more time on it - it's basically a rewrite. But I guess I still have time to do that. (Critiques from when I put it up here, I haven't made my presentation thread yet).

Sounds like something I said, RJ! Don't forget feedback is just an opinion - you don't have to do everything people suggest, especially when everyone else seemed fine with it

Yes. I decided to ignore the one that's been troubling me :) I have changed what I agreed with. But what was funny was, that upon reading this stuff I wrote, I can't for the life of me understand how people were positive about them haha. Hopefully they are better now :s
