Is it just me who hates Harry Potter?

It's the hype that annoys me. It's a okay idea, shes not really the greatest writer though and gets loads of money from it.
 
i love harry potter...

the series saved my life during this last summer!(death by boredom)
any way, who is y'all's favorite character?
and what do y'all think about harry and ginny being together?
 
I agree with Harleen92- i don't Love or Hate HP.
I read the first 2 before all the hype started and really like them. But now the money and the fame has gone to JKR head- i don't get the feeling that she writes because she loves it or even just likes it- just 'cause she gets a big wad of cash and publicity at the end of the process.That's not what writting is about- it makes it a whole lot less enjoyable for the reader too.
 
I don't know about that.. if that were truly the case, why would she stop writing Harry Potter? If she only wanted the money, she'd milk the Potter series for all it was worth and write it into the ground. She may have made a gajillion dollars off of the franchise but she is showing at least some respect for the art by not doing what other authors like Jordan or Goodkind are doing.
 
For years i thought the Harry Potter books were stupid and really disliked them, i saw the movies and didn't mind them but i still didn't read the books until i got the Prisoner of Azkaban for Christmas in 2003, i loved the books and bought the first four within a few weeks and waited in line for 3 hours for the fifth book.
My advice to everyone is not to judge the books before you read them.
 
I'm not a big fan of harry, i prefer other writers to be honest. I can't stand that she so obviously pilferes so many ideas from old myths etc. It really bothers me too with all this talk about a book called beneath platform 9 & 3/4, by another author before HP came along, gives me less respect for her.

I also can't stand her attitude:
1. she has tons of cash
2. shes published and a best seller
3. she "brings joy to all the good little girls and boys"
That at least should perk you up a bit mrs.

Well, look at Jordan or Goodkind... They're making their careers off of one series of books. Long after they should have stopped writing because the quality was so poor, they keep doing it.

Now Rowling, on the other hand, said she was going to do 7 books and that's what it's looking like is going to happen. She's not squeezing every last living drop of life out of her series by dragging it on, and on, and on, and on.

For all intents and purposes, she appears to care about her story, and sees it as a story rather than other authors who seem to only see their books as a means to and end - money makers. They're willing to sacrifice the quality of their work for a large quantity of money.

And I'm not saying she's perfect, but she is popular. And compared to what some of the other "popular" writers are doing, she seems much more concerned with quality. Maybe it's because she already has a gazillion dollars and doesn't need to worry about a quantity of money.
 
Pardon me, but unless you are reading both jordan and goodkind you can't really make that statement, cause then you just throwing around ungrounded opinions.

Plus there are a legion of people out there, who would beg to differ. (do you know there's a 'pay for access' site for making predictions about what's going to happen in Jordan's universe, and there are thousands of members.)

Finally, the last time i read both authors there was nothing different about their writing, and both confess (in interviews) to having an end result for their stories in their heads and are just trying to get there, and both are writing (as every good writer admits to be) for themselves, until they are done having fun with their world after all its their work.

And they're doing it for the fun of writing, they don't even get the butt-load of cash that rowling gets for her books, but that doesn' matter to them. Personally i don't think either's abilities have slipped, many where confused with jordan's book winter's heart, but that's only because it crosses timelines with the end of the book before it.

Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, but unless you have been reading the series you've just bashed, until the resent present, you can't make that comment, its ungrounded and just a dump on two beloved fantasy authors to make rowling seem better in your eyes. Rowling's done well, but you can insult other authors for nothing because you like her.

I agree with Janos on this one. I have read up to book 7 of Wheel of Time, and book 8 of the Sword of Truth and so far I have been unimpressed. It is obvious that Jordan is milking the series, as nothing much happens plot-wise after book 5. I enjoyed the first 4 books in the series then it just became too much. Every book after then seems to get worse and worse by my opinion and other opinions at Sffworld. Terry Goodkind is a over-rated writer, and im not even sure how he got published, but after reading the first couple of books I could tell it would go down-hill. I read his work after Steven Erikson and the writing quality difference was unbelievable I have seen hardly any good reviews on his later books and they really are is just ideology with no good plot-lines.

I believe J.K Rowling won't milk out the series like Goodkind and Jordan and will stop writing about the wizard world all together after book seven. I think it will be good if she can move past writing Harry Potter books as I really couldn't see myself enjoying them if she dragged the series on.

Apart from that: GhostShell you better calm down. You assume a lot here - do you think Janos did not read the series? Why that? Because he is saying something negative about them? You better check that first. (And you better never look into the Jordan or Goodkind forum, hehehe.)

Not to forget that you are bashing Rowling here but don't give a lot to back that up. First off, if you want to accuse her of stealing the idea of Platform 9 3/4 you better back that up - otherwise it might just be 'talk' you are hearing and then check your own post about 'insulting' an author.

Excuse me, but i'm not assuming anything, the title to this forum is "Is it just me who hates harry potter?" so commenting on what you don't in HP like is a given.
I've read the books so i'm not just bitching.

This is said as statement of fact, not an "i think" anywhere in sight. What i said was simply don't through opinions like that around unless they're founded in your knowledgeable opinion.

All i said was that in my opinion the unhappy attitude i see her with all the time bothers me. I also said the rumors about said "9 & 3/4" book was a bother and gave me less repect for her, that's my right seeing how i've read her books i have a right to comment, just as janos did, as long as we make it clear that these are our opinions and nothing more OR we back up what we're saying.
I backed up what i said about jordan and expressed that it was my opinion, when talking about rowling.

No i'm not keen on tolkien, he did create a book genre but i think there are better writers and stories out there. I've not read silverserpent - i don't know why you're suggesting these in your arguement against me, you don't even know if i've read them, that's assuming and just as bad as what you were accusing me of a moment ago.

All in all, i think rowling has done very well, i think she's brought proper reading to a new generation and that's great but i'm allowed to have my opinions as long as i make sure people know they're opinions, as i have done. I'm not here to defend the work of jordan or goodkind, or to call out a whos the best, (from the sounds of things i might lose on this thread), but i don't like it when people slap down one author to make others sound better, its kinda unfair (that being my opinion.)

Also this is a debate forum, opinions are like arseholes everyone has one and just because two don't agree, doesn't make either of them more or less knowledgeable. Avoid the 'know more/superiority' road - it leads nowhere.

Finally personal attacks on authors, even if it's as tame and subjective as "I also can't stand her attitude" don't really fly around here - please check our rules they're very simple to abide by. So let's stick to criticism of the HP books as per the title of the thread from now on please and if there are any further problems by all means pm me :)

I don't mind debates but i really don't seem to get many as i'm usually told off before anyone can debate anything.

This basic point was put before me on SFFWORLD once before when it wasn't clear that i was making an opinion. So i don't know if everyone agrees with the point that we're obviously giving opinions.

The trouble is, Ghostshell, that this thread is about whether you like HP or not. Now you can like or dislike books on the basis of character, plot, derivative nature, genre.. a multitude of things.

Unfortunately you seem to dislike HP because JKR has earned lots of money, is a best-selling author and is a bit miserable when you've seen her on TV or whatever. None of these things have anything to do with the books themselves. Am actually not yet clear if you like the books themselves or not...

Now whether she borrowed an idea from another book, I don't know but until you can explain how she was influenced and why that affects your enjoyment of HP, then I don't see the point of bringing it up. It is an unsubstantiated statement. You ask people to know their facts, you should know yours. You appear to have lost respect for her based on a rumour. I don't think that stacks up.

For me, these are entertaining books aimed at children and young adults. I have read them all and besides getting a little wordy at times, I think the author improves with every book. They are charming, harmless escapism. They are not classics of literature but they aren't supposed to be. They sell in astounding quantities and that is the author's good fortune.

Who cares if fame and fortune went to her head? Ask if the books are good or not...

I think the way i'm writing is making me come off as some sort of troll. I like her work and think that the books are good fun, her style can bother me at times and so can the obvious use of mythic ideas things like Professor Lupin - the names kind of a dead give away to the plot of the prisoner of askaban.

What bothers me about the author is that fact that things aren't subtly used in her books, some are dead obvious and the fact that there are so many authors out there working really hard to come up with ideas but when she needs a angle she borrows obviously, if she did it subtly i wouldn't mind so much.

But yes her attitude is an author point not a story, point. Sorry.

I did find the exact name of the book i refered to though: The Secret of Platform 13 made by Eva Ibbotson where the platform in King's Cross station opens up into a world of magic, wizards, witches, ogres etc. This idea takes away from my enjoyment of rowlings books because it causes me to wonder if a collection of ideas from other people all woven together made HP. That kinda bothers me, but then again, Mark Twain said: "There hasn't been an original idea since the beginning of the world." Oh well.

No, actually I have read both Jordan and Goodkind. In fact, since I travel a lot, I never go to a library and end up buying all my books, so I own all their books (except for the latest ones - Knife of Dreams and Chainfire, I don't own and haven't read those - because hardcovers are too big to lug around).

And unlike a lot of opinions I've read in the Jordan and Goodkind forums, I actually enjoyed both series when I started reading them. I suppose that's what makes their fall from grace towards the end of the series so irritating for me. Crossroads of Twilight was atrociously written and for the first time I can ever remember, I skipped ahead pages and pages through Naked Empire because it was too boring to read. (I've posted my opinion in the Jordan and Goodkind forums so I won't go into detail here) I even think Feist dropped the ball when he wrote Shards of a Broken Crown (or Rage of a Demon King - whichever one was last in that quadrilogy) because he kept constantly referring to events that happened in Betrayal at Krondor so people would buy his video game/book (which I've also heard was terrible). Although I have also heard that after Betrayal, it got better.

And it's precisely because I can recognize how far they descended into the abyss after selling out their stories for more money that I am so pleased that Rowling isn't doing the same thing. I've heard it said that people who have lots of money always want more, but that doesn't seem to be the case with Rowling. Even with all her money, she can recognize when it's time to stop.
