To get back to the original question: yes, the new series is connected with the Book of Words. But it certainly doesn't "carry on" anything.

In fact, unless you're very perceptive, you wouldn't know the two series are connected at all until the very last words in "A Cavern Of Black Ice" (the first volume in the new series). I'll not tell you what those words are, but I will admit they sent a sudden shiver down my spine.

Even after the second volume in the new series ("A Fortress Of Grey Ice") the connection is tenuous at best. The real connection is still to be explained, in other words.

I suspect that explanation is going to be great - but to be honest, who cares? Book of Words was a good series - but it pales in comparison to "Cavern". And whilst I found "Fortress" to be a bit disappointing, I would be very surprised if this series as a whole would not turn out to be Jones's best work by far.

In this light, the "connection" question is a minor thing. A bonus, if you will.

Go and get both "Cavern" and "Fortress" immediately, my lad - and hope (as we all hope) that the next volume will be published soon!

Not so good news:

I'm currently working on the third book in the Sword of Shadow Series, A Sword From Red Ice, and as soon as I have publishing dates I'll be sure to let you know.

And to think that, last time I checked Orbit's site, it was listing "Red Ice" as already in print. Ah well, all good things...

I am still wondering if the switch to Tor will change the scheduling of her publications. Prior, the U.K. edition came out quite a bit earlier than the U.S. But Tor had the book listed as an earlier release than Orbit when the original proposed publication of A Sword from Red Ice was released. And Tor tends to be a bit more assertive in its publishing rights --- reconizing that a U.K. release significantly earlier by a different publisher tends to cut into their own sales.

Interesting that she does not call it the final book. Maybe just an oversight or just an assumed implication. IRRC, the original premise was that it was a trilogy. But it might be that the original deal with Orbit and Warner was for three books. (i.e. the first three, not three maximum).

With her change to Tor in the U.S. this could be the first series in which each book I own is produced by a different publisher. Dang but that annoying. Shelving my recently arrived street edition of The Shadow Roads was annoying enough and that even had the same cover artist. Note to publishers, don't make such dramtic cover concept changes in the third book of a series.

One thing that confuses me is why there is currently no available US edition of Cavern of Black Ice. It's supposed to be published by TOR in March next year. Seems very odd, since Fortress is readily available.

The fact that she doesn't have a publishing date yet suggest that it will be a Fall release at best. Disappointing.

I am sure it had to do with the mess with her changing to Tor and Tor having to buy the rights from Warner, the publisher of the hardback edition.
Warner owned the rights to the first two books originally. But then sold the rights to Tor.

In some larger bookstores, you can still find the Warner edition of Cavern.
