Kirk and the green girl...suggestions?

I did a pretty thorough search for recommendations on aliens and humans co-habiting planets, interacting in society, politics, having relations alla Kirk and the green alien from the Cage/Menagerie but couldn't come up with any threads. I am sure I may have missed some, but anyone have any suggestions?

Doesn't necessarilly have to be a classic (Left Hand of Darkness) or pure pulp nonsense either...

Would Cherryh's Foreigner series apply? Never read it but heard mostly good things.

Hi Glelas,

Would Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card the sequel to Ender's Game, be a good example? It has a plot focusing on humans trying to live and understand another alien species on their own planet.

Also i think the entire Tales of Known Space saga, by Larry Niven, has plenty of human / alien interactions in most of the books and short stories comprising it.

The Japanese are keen on exploring human/alien relations in their films and books...So I am given to understand. There are numerous websites specialising in depicting said relations if that floats your boat...I would imagine.

I've only read the prologue and first chapter, but it was enough to tell that Battleaxe has plenty of inter-species back and forth (not just 'relations' either).

Nor Crystal Tears by Alan Dean Foster is one of the better first contact novels in my opinion.

David Brin's Uplift series deals with this quite a bit, and is excellent.

Glelas, Foreigner, whilst insaaaanely loooong is, indeed, exactly what you are looking for.

Cherryh's 40,000 in Gehenna would also qualify, albeit in a slightly different...any more would be spoilers. And although I don't have it, I think Downbelow Station is also about human-alien interaction.

My personal favorite first contact novel is Vernor Vinge's Darkness In The Deep, although that is very much focused on the contact and doesn't go much into the society established afterwards.

And psik. Umm... Human-alien *relations*.

C. J Cherryh's Chaunar series is very good for human/alien relations. We see the point of view from the alien's eyes since humans are the aliens in the series. I also second Nor Crystal Tears.

I am not aware of any human alien relations *in that sense* in Foster's stories so they might not qualify by his standards depending on what he means.

Perhaps "Involution Ocean" by Bruce Sterling. Involves a cross species relationship with some imagery which has crossed my mind over the 20 years or so since I last read it.
