Shin-Godzilla.jpg

I just finished watching the 2016 movie Shin Godzilla which showed up recently for streaming on HBO Max. It’s definitely a different Godzilla story, but it has connections to the original. This Godzilla is a scarier and bigger creature, and it has some potential to wipe out humanity via its mutations, especially as evidenced in the final scene of the film.

The Godzilla in this film starts out as a prehistoric sea creature that feeds on nuclear waste historically disposed of in the ocean. It then comes onto land and begins its mutations. The form we see above is in fact its fourth form. It’s shedding radiation everywhere as its glowing condition indicates.

This movie has a lot to say about the ineffectiveness of government, and its inability to protect the people of Japan. It has a subtext of the US government forcing its decisions on Japan as well. These no doubt are themes from Japanese history as well as the modern political landscape. The day is saved by young selfless people who aren’t afraid to make decisions.

This is a different but interesting Godzilla film. It has no direct connection to any other Godzilla films so far, although there has been some rumors of a sequel. A good film for the Godzilla or Kaju fan, or anyone who likes a monster movie.

Watched two movies recently. Neither was SF, although the first verged on fantasy in its wild imagination.
2014
Theatrical release poster, featuring the principal cast on a key card–hotel mailroom motif. The words The Grand Budapest Hotel are written in the foreground, superimposed on a dusk shot of the namesake building. Wes Anderson in a fit of absurdity. Excellent reviews. Showed upon some lists as the funniest film of the year. I would go with absurd as a more exact description.
Received nine Academy Award nominations. Won four. Notable are the sets, color and acting. Way off the beaten path.

David Lynch's 1999It's Not an adventure. It's
about people and landscape. A 350 mile drive by lawn tractor. Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek with Harry Dean Stanton. Ebert gave it a rave review.
. Deservedly so.

"The first time I saw “The Straight Story,” I focused on the foreground and liked it. The second time I focused on the background, too, and loved it.." Ebert

PIGGY ( Carlota Pereda ) on FILM4 , a UK freeview channel .

Spanish slasher which interestingly subverts some classic slasher tropes . Recommended .

THE CREATOR ( Gareth Edwards ) FILM4

Sci - fi blockbuster which passed a couple of hours . Not bad .

It’s been great to be credited with this 2025 movie thread! However, I guess it’s time for a 2026 thread, and this year I’ll leave it up to others to create it. Thanks for all the great discussions and recommendations!
