Hi all,

I remember getting half way through a fantasy book (first one in a series I think) but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it and would love to track it down...

Things I remember include:

It had a typical master/apprentice role (making mechanical items I think) for the protagonist.

One of the other main characters was a girl that had to grow up (or spend a considerable time) in a 'house of pleasure' or similar.

I think there was a spy/assassin/betrayer that started hunting the two people (this may have been the 'downtrodden second apprentice' that was never appreciated by the master).

The two escape the village (assisted by someone that lived on the outskirts of the village...a healer perhaps?) and are pursued by people that drive mechanical tank like vehicles (for some reason I think they had arms as well??). i think the mechanical vehicles required a mage to power them.

I remember one scene where they had to scale an icy/snowy cliff and surprise a sentry at the top.

There was magic in the mix as well, but I can't remember how it worked...crystals perhaps??

There was further pursuit across a snowy plain.

That's about it...any ideas??

No problem :)

I really enjoyed the Well of Echoes series, and the Song of the tears series that follows it.

I just did a wiki search on Ian irvine and found out he's an aussie. Just shows how little exposure local writers get...

I reckon might have to start at the beginning with the View From the Mirror Quartet.

View from the Mirror is good aswell , its been a while since I read them, but I know I have enjoyed most of Ian Irvine's book.
