It could be, but Fuller said no characters from TOS will appear in the first season (I assume he meant regulars because he wants Winona Ryder to appear as Amanda Grayson) and there's almost no way to do that story without including young Kirk. It's also more like 20 years before Kirk's first five year mission, not 10, and while I'm not holding him to a static decade, I'd say 29 is way off from 10.

It airs in early 2017 and if you live anywhere other than the US or Canada, it will be on Netflix. Otherwise you're stuck with CBS All Access which is subscriber-only.

I love Trek and have watched pretty much every episode ever made - rewatching TNG with my 11 yo son right now. But if it is only available as a sub I call BS. I hate that.

The subscription aspect might be a turnoff to the fan base.

Doing series set long after Star Trek , The Next Generation ,DS9 and Voyager would have been a far better idea. , What is the point of this series other then to be a trek timeline filler? One aspect of Trek is it's supposed to be about exploring the future. The problem with doing a prequel series is that there is no real suspense here , We know that in the end , they are going to follow the timeline.

It's a fair point, though I guess these days we're in multiple alternate timelines, so that gives them leeway.

Here I'll give it a look, though the subscription thing may limit things - here in the UK at least we'll be able to get the series without too much fuss.

There were parts of 'Enterprise' I liked, and it seemed to be going somewhere when it was cancelled. Unfortunately the latter few series had too many characters I found annoying - Neelix & Kes in Voyager, the Borg generally... so I suspect this will be similar. Cautious look expected.

A prequel setting is only "limiting" if you stick with established characters. If this was "the adventures of young James Kirk" or something, okay, I agree, that would suck.

But we're dealing with an entirely different set of characters on an entirely different starship and from what Bryan Fuller has said, the whole plot will be an exploration of an event that's already been mentioned, just never explored.

Compare this with Enterprise, where there is now a Starfleet vessel named Enterprise in 2161. when there never had been before, and events like the Temporal Cold War and Xindi attack aren't even mentioned as points of historical note in any of the other series. The whole thing could be removed from canon and not only would the other series still make sense, they would make MORE sense.

This one is more like taking an established part of history and fleshing it out.

Now, as for the arguments that a new series should take place a century after Voyager or whatever...sorry, but you don't really want that. You just think you do. Trek presented us with a 23rd and 24th Century that was both too futuristic (acting as if twenty years ago we would already be producing genetically enhanced superhumans) and nowhere near futuristic enough (utterly failing to predict things like the internet, and having "futuristic" personal displays that can do less than our modern smartphones). Moving us into the late 2400's would either be stupidly backward, tech-wise, or so futuristic as to be unrelatable.

I'm excited about a new Star Trek series set in the prime timeline! Bryan Fuller being behind it also makes me optimistic.

I really have no problem with it being a prequel, as I think that a post-Voyager time period becomes problematic. The results of the advances in technology we saw at the end of that series would make it difficult to tell relatable stories. Maybe someone someday can pull off a series with Federation Timeships fighting some incredibly advanced and cunning enemy, but I'm not sure we are there yet.

My only concern is that it will be exclusive to the CBS All-Access streaming platform after the first couple of episodes, which are supposed to show on CBS. I really do not want to subscribe to a separate streaming service that I have no interest in just to watch new Trek. I would almost rather buy it directly from iTunes or Amazon, if that will be an option. The rest of the world will be able to watch it on Netflix, but not North America...

You could always watch the first episode (or two, I think) that will be aired on regular television. If you think it's worth it, subscribe for as long as you think you can. If you don't, don't. As for me (in Canada), apparently it will air on our sci-fi channel.

At this point, I think I am out. Especially if they're basing their ship design on that ugly brown concept from way back in Star Trek Phase 2. Also, I'm already paying for satellite but I have to pay CBS more money to watch this? I don't think so, at least not at the moment. At most I might give the pilot a viewing.

This appears to be the case, and it is reportedly at the request of the showrunners:

"CBS executives stressed that the delay was driven by the need to give the “Star Trek” creative team more time to meet expectations for the series, particularly with special effects."

Better special effects sounds like a good thing for a Star Trek series...

Sounds like they saw the product and they're having doubts about it, but that's just my theory. Whatever they come up with is going to have to be worth the hassle and expense of their CBS All Access service. It could be the execs looked it over and thought it needed some more work. If the ship design is as ugly as I'm thinking, I don't find a delay that surprising.

As a fan of the franchise, I'm definitely curious about it. The trailer wasn't bad. That being said, I'm a bit concerned at Fuller leaving and the constant delays. I do hope it works out, but it's hard to tell until we start seeing some episodes.

I suspect it will suck. TOS was lightning in a bottle, the first of its kind. I've not enjoyed any of the post TAS iterations very much (and each had fewer bright spots than the last). NuTrek was just wretched.

That said, the TOS universe is rich and wide, and if they populate it with more vessels, then I am a big fan of the idea. I'm tired of Big Three stories. That's why I liked Starship Exeter so much and wish there had been more than one episode.

Anyway, I'll watch it. I hope to be pleasantly surprised!

Both trailers look amazing. And everything I'm hearing from the current producers has me thinking the show is in good hands.

The Klingons certainly look different, but I think they look better. I love the almost "epic fantasy orc" look they have going for them, from their own look to their weapons, armor and ships.

Trek needed a shot of adrenaline. Once DS9 ended, it felt stagnant, like it was doing the same thing over and over again. It even all looked the same. This looks like Star Trek, but it looks like a kinetic show that is engaging and involving.

Some things to clear up; Michelle Yeoh is not this show's answer to Kirk, Picard, et al, and neither is Jason Isaacs. This series will focus on Commander Burnham, played by Sonequa Martin-Greene, who you saw in both trailers getting a monopoly of screen time. Yeoh plays the captain Burnham is serving under at the start of the series, and the producers seem to be saying she will have a role in the entire season, but a supporting one, not a lead one. Isaacs plays the captain of the Discovery, where Burnham serves from the second episode onward, but I'm not sure in what capacity. She's the first officer on the Shenzhou, which is Yeoh's ship, but it's not been clearly stated that this will be her role on the Discovery.
