NFL: Season 2005/05

The quest has begun. Not great, but a win is a win. Hopefully the Patriots will have it together better for Carolina.

Loved the ads. I really liked the Dunkin Donuts ad with Troy Brown, answering the phone, teaching the mascot to dance, cooking the food, and making another SB ring for Mr. Kraft. The one about drafting the Diet Pepsi machine was fun too, it had Willy Mac. And the one about Tom Brady and his offensive lineman who followed him on a date, and were not really there, but were metaphors for the different levels of digital security -- I have no idea what the ad was for, but it was funny.

And it was great to see Tedy Bruschi, even if only on the sideline. Doug Flutie didn't play but he was running around on the sideline, making suggestions and helping out. The guys on the team say he would make a great coach when done playing.

It was great to see 300 pound Wilfork get that interception - they were teasing him after the game that not only does he lead the team in interceptions now, but he also leads the league

Go Patriots! and also, Down With The Raiders! That was a pretty good game, all told. The Raiders made the Pats look so good, it was hard to see what Brady was critiquing at the end of the game. It's good that they're not overconfident, though.

When it comes to NFL, I'm almost more of an anti-fan than a fan. I'll usually root for Patriots, Packers, Broncos and Saints, but I'll ALWAYS root against the Raiders, the Cardinals and the Cowboys.

I've split the recent American Football posts from the Favourite Sporting events thread, with a full season just starting it made more sense to discuss all the highs and (if your a Dolphins fan ) lows of it in a new thread.

So who are everyone's contenders, darkhorses and no-hopers?

Colts, Pats and Eagles seem to be everyboy's faves for the SB. Vikings, Chargers and Steelers are contenders, with the Rams in the Stephen Jackson era my tip to be major darkhorses. As for no hopers - can the Saints focus after Katrina and playing away from home? Dolphins (Frerotte good enough to lead a struggling team?) and maybe the Cardinals.

All knowledgeable fans are aware of the universal truth that any NFL champsionship belongs in Green Bay. Any alternative lacks the history, mystique, and romance of the place. Having a football champsionship in New England or the deep South or anywhere not Green Bay just makes no sense. It would be like having a basketball championship in someplace not Boston.

These things happen, I know, but the universe gets it revenge when it does. The Patriots won last year and - right away - the universe got even with the theatric release of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

Ergo, for the good of the universe, the champsionship will return to Green Bay. Q.E.D.

Well I hope the Browns do well, and Notre Dame, because Charlie and Romeo are there. Charlie also has to send people back to the mother-ship.

I think the Steelers may be in trouble with Big Ben. He has been terrible in pre-season, and he and the coach are not working well together. They have had dueling press conferences where the QB contradicts the coach - not good. Ben was starting to struggle at the end of last season. The local sports guys were saying that by the end of the year all the teams that came in to play them had enough of him on tape that they could hone in on his weaknesses and tendencies to exploit them.

I am bumed that Ty Law is playing for the Jets. I really want him to come home.

No the football gods smile on NE. They make it snow everytime the Colts come to town in the winter.

Green Bay will never amount to anything until they get rid of Favre. He may have been great once, and he gives the appearance of still being fit, but he just doesn't have it. He seems to act like a fruit loop when the pressure is on. He is a hinderance because they think they can rely on him, but he just flakes out.

Sort of like the Pats and Drew Bledsoe (though Favre in his prime was much better than Bledsoe will ever be), though he never flaked out, he just could never get to a higher level. When we had Bledsoe we had a football like substance - and it fooled some people into thinking that one year we could go all the way. It wasn't until BB and Tommy Terrific came in that we actually could do it. And we aren't going to let it go without a fight.

I gave up on the coming season in the pre-season when the Bengals (yes they're my team) got drilled by the Eagles. I lost all hope right then and there. Fifteen years of utter futility will do that to you. Bengals = No chance.
Guess 'll stick with college football where my Golden Domers just whooped some Wolverine ass.

ND has Charlie Weiss and his 3 New England Patriot Superbowl wins, and several years of absorbing the way to coach from BB.

Tom Brady and Charlie had a bet on the game because Brady went to college at Michigan. Tom has to wear a ND hat at his next post-game press conference, next Sunday.

In terms of the Bengals, I think they have lost the will to live because of the uiniforms they have to wear. They were just voted the ugliest unis in the league from a poll on the ESPN web site I think.

But don't write them off just because of preseason. If the coach was using it to try new people and possibilites then, though they may have lost, they may have learned valuable info they can use to win in the regular season. Last year the Pats lost either all their preseason games or 3 of them, and won the superbowl. Only time will tell if they were a learning expericence or not for the Bengals.

Pats last year had just come off 2 Super Bowls out of the last 3. The Bengals have been the worst team in the history of the NFL over a 10 or 15 year stretch. It's just too painful to hope they do well when they fail utterly, and those hideous unis. They actually paid someone to come up with those? Of course, they won today and kicked the Brownies up and down the field, so maybe a little hope sprung loose today.

Yes I know the Pats and the Bengals are not equivalent, but the Bengals could have learned something from their preseason.

I saw they won on the scoreboard. I was sad that they beat the Browns (Go Romeo) but it it a good start. I didn't see this game here.

I guess Ben maybe also learned something from his horrible preseason 'cause he and the Steelers did well too.

I saw the Jets at KC, my god KC has a defense. Glad to see the Jets get killed. Penny fumbled like 6 times and lost the ball twice. Ty Law is going to miss Tom Brady.

Miami beat the Broncos and I am glad because we go on the road to Denver soon I think and it is always tough to play well there. It would really help if they sucked this season. But I don't want a strong Miami either -- even when they suck they are a tough team.

Buffalo won which is also not good (they were in very odd unis, is it another new look, or are these alternates or throwbacks ?). But Carolina lost which is. Now if only the Colts lay an egg tongiht.

The Dallas game just started and Bledsoe has fumbled and earned a delay of game penalty.

How wrong can I guy be? Ok premature on the first day of the season but Miami dump on Denver, Saints sneak one at the Panthers, Seattle outlasted by the Jags and the Buccs over the Vikings with more to come. I had none of those results in my Fantasy league predictions

The whole fantasy thing escapes me. I don't know enough (or care enough) about the players on other teams to do it.

I mean I like the Pats, and because of that, I want to spread the misery of losing to many other teams who might be a problem. But that is the only real interest I have in other teams or players.

Being on the other side of the Atlantic (Wales) it's a fascination with the game more than with a single team. I'm a Bears fan because I spent an exchange year at the University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana and because Soldier Field was being rebuilt, the Bears played all their home games at the Illini stadium, but I can still appreciate the Raven defence or Mannings bombs. I've had to learn the game rather than be brought up around it so I guess the attraction is more general and I love fantasy leagues and my players doing well

So there I was foolishly thinking that things would return to normal this week - again very wrong, my predictions and those of many others seem to be way off kilter. I mean the Browns holding off the Packers despite Favre throwing 350, Panthers stifle the Pats, the Colts now have a defense (can you say prematurely - Superbowl ) Bengals tear the Vikings to shreds and the Buccs are 2-0. If the Saints win tomorrow I'll be expecting see Elvis on my lawn

The Colts have always had a defense, it is their offense that stinks. Yes I know that is counter-intuitive but statisticlly true. They seemed to have learned that the offense needs to stay on the field and chew up the clock and let their defense rest, and the offense needs not to fold up when they play good teams. They might be a real threat this year if they can keep it up.

The Pats just stunk. Don't know if it was the occasional bad game they have, or if they are not able to get it together with all the changes this year. They beat the Raiders, but they didn't look right doing it. At least this loss is aginst the NFC so it doesn't really matter in the long run if the Pats do get their act together.

Glad the Browns won, go Romeo. And the Jets, if Miami had won they would have been in first place in the AFC East. Squish the fish !

Well Radone, the Bengals have a better record this year, so far, than the Pats. Cheer up your year may have come.

Do the Pats have a lot of players out on injury? That might explain the rather horrible showing against the Panthers.

I'm just glad that the Broncos were able to squeeze out a 17-14 win yesterday. Ouch.
