science fiction is stagnating. i intend to change that. we dont need a hundred bland stories and weak movies with stunning graphics that attempt to compensate for repetitive, one-dimensional storylines. this generation needs an entire new universe to immerse itself in, a star wars for the 2010's, for lack of a better analogy. i am writing just that. i estimate that my first book of the series will be done before end of the year. if something new that not only science fiction but literature enthusiasts will become enamored with peaks your intrest, keep an eye out for my new universe.

There are so many things wrong with that statement.

The producers of Star Wars admitted that it was NOT SCIENCE FICTION in 1977. They called it SPACE FANTASY. So using that as a standard shows what is wrong with what is called science fiction today.

These are truly degenerate days. The Star Wars brainwashing must be overcome.

If only the OP weren't an advertisement, I'd like to have a conversation with this fellow.

Kyle,
I will take your words at face value and I applaud your ambition. That is a tall goal you've set for yourself. I wish you luck and perseverance. I suspect you will need ample quantities of both to pull that off. For what it is worth, my unpublished author's advice to you would be to concentrate on telling a good, entertaining story with interesting characters, and tell it well. If it shakes up the SF biosphere all the better.

Jim

Because I can, and because you asked for it.

I've got my own pretty awesome universes, thank you very much! I want a character I can fall in love with. Give me her/him and I'll follow you anywhere. Good luck! :)

There are so many things wrong with the original statement.
Perhaps am I misconstruing your intent, but was there something wrong with the use of a contraction? I am piqued. Please support the learning of my second language through positive reinforcement, if the case.

"There's" is a contraction for "there is," which refers to something in the singular. Whereas "there are" refers to the plural. They both refer to "so many things," and "things" is plural.

My French is horrifying.

Oh, I knew the rule but failed to notice. Thank you.

My French is starting to suck, too. Too much second language.

I wasn't referring to your post, but rather the original post to start this thread. Mysteriously, the original poster hasn't returned.

That being said, I find few areas that give me the option to classify my novel as Science Fantasy, as it should be. It seems the many drop windows of the web's inhabitants do not seem to recognize the distinction.

Well, I don't think I'd hold up Star Wars as the shining beacon of SF.....on the other hand it was a fun romp.

There are many great SF stories and novels being published. The problem (as it is with all genres these days) is that there is too much krap being published and it is difficult to sort out the good stuff.

This is why I see sites like this one and reviews and recommendation sites as becoming more and more important....of course you have to find the reviewers, sites, and recommendations that match your reading needs. Everyone is a bit different.

I applaude you (the O.P.) for wanting to fire up the SF world! Go for it! Make it happen!

Your work isn't going to be published unless you have a better concept of grammar, capitalization, and punctuation.

Depends on how well the deviation from normal uses is done, see Cormac McCartney. And of course there is the opportunity of self-publishing that is open to anyone, although the brilliant success that is announced is less than guaranteed.

I think it's the toughest genre to write in, because the science has to be believable, the warp speed kind of science has been done to death, and there just aren't a whole lot of authors out there who understand the next generation of scientific discovery fields like quantum physics. (And the ones that do understand it, tend to be poor at characterization). But I think it's always been like this. I don't think the ratio sci-fi books available, or even good sci-fi books, is any different than it was in the 70's or 50's that were supposedly the heyday of sci-fi.

Forget about science fiction or fantasy. Star Wars was entertaining and fun to watch. The first three were more fun than the last three (by release date). I thought the reason why we read fiction is to be entertained. Otherwise you would be reading the encyclopedia to past the time. A book doesn’t have to be ground breaking, it just has to be entertaining.
