Finally on the home straight on a strip - only 8 pages but it's seems like an age since I started it due to total mojo failure during the lockdown. (Trying to keep your creative juices going with three kids underfoot is HARD!) Anyway. I'm near the end of it. One more page to letter and then another pass through the whole thing doing some work on the colouring and... I'm coming to the conclusion that I can't show it to anyone. For a while at least..

At the best of times, as a white male, I feel a bit nervous about writing / drawing black female characters - especially when I'm playing with Blaxploitation Movie cliches - but now is not the time to be publishing them, no matter how silly and funny they are.

JM, the fact that you think and worry about this does you credit. Concern about timing is a valid one - and contrary to what Av D obviously thinks, the respectful, well-thought-out (re)incorporation of cultural imagary and other content by artists of different demographics is not considered "racist" by anyone thinking more deeply than a puddle. On the contrary, it would be indicative of a healthy multiculture in which cross-fertilisation of ideas and influences is encouraged.
... Now is not the time to be publishing them, no matter how silly and funny they are.
This could also be said of Av D's response. Minus the "funny", unless it's a bitter laugh...

I'm reminding folks that we issued a temporary but still currently in effect suspension of all discussion on racial issues in the Writing Forum due to these types of situations. So please move on to other topics in line with the topic of the thread itself, thanks.

My comic strip mojo went on a sulk after finishing the above mentioned 8 pager and has been refusing to play - but yesterday, half way down the stairs, this sneaked past its grumpy defences.

Acceptance just received, no contract as yet, but when it's finalized I'll be back to say more.
That was fast. As was the whole process, as I only submitted the story this morning! So, my entry to one of last year's monthly contests here, Recycle of Violence, has just been picked up by new zine Dark Matter Magazine. They apparently ran a successful Kickstarter just last month, their plan is to release six issues a year starting 2021, so I've got a bit to wait.

(The only reason I subbed anything today is because, after two good days of writing, I started off bad this morning and decided to distract myself with editing magazine submissions... and then thought, what the hell, might as well put a few of my own out while I'm at it)

That makes three sales in the last 15 months, the last two of which landed professional rates. I can only go downhill from here!

I have various problems. One is I can't shut my fool mouth, writingwise, so that a short story ends up being anything but! My shortest ones come in around the 3 or 4,000 word mark... I also start projects with great intentions, then either get a really great idea and work on that, leaving the other project for a while, or I lose interest/get stuck on one and move on to another. And another. I'm beginning to think many of my "short stories" could almost qualify as novels in their own right. I mean, "A Harmless Old Man" pegged out at just over 50K while "Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Planet!" is heading for 70k and nowhere near even half done!

With that in mind, and always remembering I'm probably really only a figment of your imagination and that if you wish really hard I'll go away, here's my current state of play:

The Last Temptation of Billy the Kid - Finished
Fury - Finished
A Harmless Old Man - Finished
Behind the Mask - Finished
The Yellow Windows of the Evening Train (prize to anyone who gets where that title came from!) - Finished
Kingdom of Sadness - Finished
Pooky's Last Ride - Finished
Shadow Play - Working on
Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Planet - Working on
The Long Game - Started, but only barely
Faceless - Started, but only barely
That Way Lies Madness - About three quarters finished
Manhattan Gothic - Finished, but has to be totally rewritten
Requiem for a Dying World - Begun
In His Defence - Started but need to research the criminal justice system more
I Never Promised You A Rose Garden - Half finished
If These Walls Could Speak - Begun, basic idea of where it's going
No Room for Pity - Half completed
News from Nowhere - Half completed, working on at the moment
Eternity Road - Working on at the moment

See what I mean?
Anyone who wants more information on anything above just shout.
And now, I go back to whatever it is I do.

Aha! I just woke up from a siesta with a joke for a strip in my head. Love it when that happens. My subconscious 90%ly worked it out when I wasn't looking. It's not a great joke. And not a particularly complicated one - and I'm not sure that it's that PC.

What's remarkable (to me) though is that this strip is in French and loses meaning when translated into English. I'm obviously learning something from my recent arse-about-face, teach-myself-French-by-reading-comicbooks reading habits.

Finally finished the first draft of Priest of Gallows last night. This series was originally supposed to be a trilogy but is now a quartet, which made re-structuring what is now book 3 of 4 something of a challenge!

Working on a couple of projects at the moment ~ The second Zoology book & a project started almost by accident as a twitter prompt. You can follow The Amulet of Tears, a science fiction fantasy tale, on this twitter account @TearsAmulet. Quite a fun way to write & a good way to hone writing skills with the word count on each tweet.
(Also updated my profile image from 'Techanoid' from Zoology to 'Flying LIzard' from Amulet of Tears!)

Tidying up.... so a new thread is HERE.
Sad as I am to see this one go, it's probably about time.
