Reading in April 2012

I'm really dragging my heels with The Daemon Prism. I'm not enjoying it. I might put it aside and come back to it later (again). Personally, I'm finding it incredibly boring.

Alright, so I set it aside for now. I'll finish it eventually. Sometimes, when I put a book aside for a while (a year?) and then go back to it, I wonder why I was bored enough to put it aside. Maybe this will happen with me and this book.

So, I just bought and started a short story anthology called Black Swan, White Raven, edited by Terri Windling and Ellen Datlow. I loved Windling's fairy tale series that she edited solo, and I'm in need of new(to me) authors. I've only read a handful of the authors in this anthology so I'm hoping for some good stuff. Authors showcased in it are: Michael Cadnum, Karen Joy Fowler, Michael Blumlein, Nalo Hopkinson, Esther M. Friesner, Joyce Carol Oates, Steve Rasnick Tem, Garry Kilworth, Anne Bishop, Gregory Frost, Sten Westgard, Midori Snyder, Harvey Jacobs, Don Webb, Bruce Glassco, Pat Murphy, John Crowley, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Susanna Clarke, Nancy Kess, and Jane Yolen.

Pratchett books definitely take longer than they should to read due to laugh breaks. When I read Guards! Guards! it took me a good five minutes to get through page two. I couldn't get past the line: "The city wassa, wassa, wozzname. Thing."

Something about "Thing" as its own sentence killed me.

I still have the whole series in front of me . The first four books are in my TBR stacks ready to go for whenever the moment is right.

In searching for the next book to read, nothing jumped out at me. If this happens after too many lousy books, to 'the Tank' it is, but I've had some great reads of late. This means I slide back to an author I have a ton of and can easily read at any time - David Gemmell. Finally getting around to reading Waylander.

A few days ago I finished Caine's Law.

This is another book that just came too late for me; I remember loving the first Caine duology and also the first half of the duology ending here, but when I opened this one I realized that I kind of forgot most of what was about except in a vague sense. I did a quick refresh and i realized that I simply cannot suspend disbelief any more for the ultimate simplistic super hero taking revenge on an unjust society storyline which this series amounts too in the end; yes, the hero is complicated, with dark impulses but when all is said and done there is very little depth and nuance; anger, violence in droves but I couldn't find the magic of a few years ago and I simply did not care about the hero, the secondary characters or the the setting

I finished it up about a week ago. I really felt like I needed to have re-reads Caine: Black Knife prior, but forged through and ended up feeling somewhat like you, not to that extent though. Not sure I was OK with where things ended up - it nearly felt a bit like the end of Blade of Tyshalle.

I gave up on Caine series after Caine:Black Knife. This book was like poorly made copy of the first books of duology.

I bought Shadow Ops: Control Point. I'm excited to read it. Hopefully the delivery is quick.

Finished The Blue Girl by Charles de Lint - lighter in tone than my previous read (Onion Girl) with two lively schoolgirls dealing with bullies at school, chatting about boyfriends and parental surveillance techniques and fighting daemonic entities from the Faerieland in their spare time. I liked it, and I plan to read more Newport stories.

I'm returning now to one of my favorite series : Vlad Taltos by Steven Brust. I have reached volume 12 - Iorich, and the only problem I see on the horizon is the fact that I am running out of books to continue the story. I don't know how many more the author has planned, probably 16, one for each Dragaera House.

Just don't do what I did and read a whole bunch in a row. It completely turned me off of de Lint. You start to notice that a lot of this books are the same. Spread them out and you should be fine.

I am finally nearing the end of Reaper's Gale (180 pages left). I've been reading it sporadically over the last 2 months it seems. I will read it for a few days, get burned out a little and take a few days off, then read it a few more. Now that i am close to the end, I'll try to finish it off before getting distracted by something else. Still really like Malazan, but getting burned out by the length of it (and I love big books and long series). I will say I think I have enjoyed this one less than any of the previous books, though. Some of the Malazan soldiers are starting to blur together for me, too.

I think I might jump into the next arc of the Wurts series (I've read the first 3 books, and feel like starting the next arc, beginning with The Fugitive Prince). Or I will jump into book 3 of WoT.

I finally got my review for Arctic Rising by Tobias Buckell written - it's very fun and very good. I still owe a review for The Throne of the Crescent Moon. I'm currently reading Blade of Tyshalle by Matthew Stove - I'd forgotten just how good the Caine books are.

I just restarted these. I read the first three many years ago, back when they were first published, and I liked em alot. For some reason, though, I never went further than that. Lately I've been wishing they were available in audio -- but for some reason, they have never been recorded. Now I've given up and started reading em in ebook. We'll see how far I get this time.

Finished The Crippled God , what a journey ! Fantastic end the series.

Started Control Point and so far (60 pages or so) failing to see the hype. Disjointed writing coupled with no engaging characters.... Hope it improves.

I read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and now I reading The Loch by Steve Alten. It was interesting, but it's become a struggle now.

After reading some historical non-fiction, I started Rise of Empire Michael J Sullivan's second Riyria omnibus. That was at about 5 AM so I got all of 11 pages deep before needing sleep.

Moved onto Sir Pratchett's Wintersmith last night after, late last week, finishing his not-so-good Equal Rites.
