Reading in February 2012

I think you are pretty much spot on here. It was engaging enough for me to buy the next book, but it was also fairly forgettable. I found his collaboration with Ty Frank Leviathan Wakes to be much more fun.
Also pretty much spot on.

The Dragon's Path is good, but I forgot it. Even whilst reading it, I forgot it. Leviathan Wakes is utterly superb, though. Best sci-fi novel of 2011, I'd say. Won't call it a debut, that's unfair to others.

Only because Faith, by John Love, came out 5 days too late to count...:p

Now there's a book that needs more hype. I've been slightly underwhelmed by the hyped SF debuts of recent years (well, LW isn't a debut but... well, kind of) Leviathan Wakes, The Quantum Thief, and The Windup Girl (well, majorly underwhelmed by the last), but Faith, which doesn't seem to be getting half the attention despite some glowing reviews, is truly brilliant. I see a few mentions in a search here, mind you. :)

Finished the Dragon's Path, got better toward the end. Especially liked the epilogue (even if it was a bit obvious). I'll probably continue with the series but I have to say it failed to meet my expectations. The hype around Abraham seems a bit overblown in retrospect. His characterizations are solid but the prose is a bit workmanlike and the setting and the plot didn't seem particularly original to me. I kind of view him as a poor man's Tad Williams perhaps (although I've only read the one book)

You summed it up perfectly. I'm about 2/3 into it and am only trudging through to the end because I heard it gets better. I don't even like his characterizations.

I had never heard of it, but on the strength of your recommendation I looked up a few reviews, then ordered it.

Starting a new book today, and guess what it's an OMNIBUS! I'll be diving into the big fat OMNIBUS The Legend of Eli Monpress by Rachel Aaron today.

Sir, you shall receive a key to the city, and have long since earned it. May the Omnibus bless you!

Peter your love of the Omnibus is very enteraining. I can get a gold star on my forehead for writing them? Probably not...the star would have to go to Orbit - darn - as they were the one who decided to put them together.

Oh...and what is the plural of Omnibus....Omnibi? Omnibuses? Something else? I figured if anyone would know it would be you.

Officially, I believe it's Omnibuses.

We have been known (or at least I have been known) to say omnibii, however.

I'm ten chapters into the first novel The Spirit Thief and I am enjoying it. Aaron's got a strong narrative pull, she's populating the story with mostly believable characters. If things proceed along this path, I think I'll enjoy this Omnibus. However, I've still got over 900 pages to go to pronounce a complete verdict.

Omnibus - derivations:
Omnibuses correct plural
Omnibii - accepted plural
Omnibify / omnibification - The act of a publisher binding two or more novels under one cover. Used in a sentence:

It would be great if the folks at ACE would omnibify Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet novels.

I see that Tor is following Orbit's (UK) lead by beginning the Omnibification process of Daniel Abraham's Long Price quartet

Just be careful when and where you Omnibify: can cause damage and/or arrest if in public. ;)

Pssst! ... C'mere ...

... I just heard an omnibification rumor: Jordan's Wheel Of Time. And it'll come with a complimentary flatbed.

Mmm, I have considered this in the past and find it rather discouraging. I understand that many truly enjoy their particular favorites, but I wonder how many great stories have been missed, or lost.

I agree that it can be discouraging, and that there are certainly stories out there that I'd love, or quite like, if I could but find them. But I try to maintain a certain level of optimism as this means that I know that there are works out there that I will enjoy that are still to be found. And I take heart in the authors and stories that have gained exposure.

For example, I remember Neil Gaiman pre-Sandman, and that there was a brief time, early on, when there were rumors that Sandman might be canceled due to it's sales. But of course that didn't come to pass and today he is "Neil Gaiman" and there are many people who know his name and will seek out his backlist. That won't happen to every writer, of course, but I try to keep in mind the successes as well as those we've talked of who failed to gain the attention that they might have deserved.

Good to know, I've read the Sun Sword series and enjoyed it. The duology is in the 'on deck' position of my TRP.

Hello DarthV,

If you've already read the Sun Sword series, then it might be worthwhile to check out Skirmish, the fourth novel in the House War series. It takes place concurrently with Book 6 of Sun Sword and shows what happens in the North with (spoiler for Sun Sword)
Jewel, Celleriant, Avandar and the people that they take with them
.
