Yeah, I was actually just searching through some old threads and Armor and Starship Troopers interested me. I liked the Starship Troopers movie as a kid, so I'm excited to read the book, since it's leagues above the movie. Thanks for the recommendation:) :D

I read Starship Troopers after I saw the movie and was pleasantly surprised that there was pretty much nothing in the movie that was in the book. The movie was.... odd, but the level of violence pretty much distracted me from anything that was going on in the film.

The book is a classic though.

I just finished reading Ender's Game, which is a great book. I like the military setting of the book, how soldiers are trained to defeat an imposing alien invasion. I also read the Halo novel The Fall of Reach (good books, but not literary genius) and I was wondering if there was any other novels along those lines?

The Forever War by Joe Haldeman is also along those lines - military SF from the view of an elite soldier, trained to fight an alien enemy that nothing is known about. It's an excellent nove, but much more cynical and much darker than either of those you listed. But one thing that struck me in it at the beginning was how much the training sections seemed like a vastly improved version of those in the Fall of Reach.

I just finished The Space Opera Renaissance, ed. David G. Hartwell & Kathryn Cramer. What a book! My full review can be found over at the book's thread under Science Fiction.

Yes indeed. There's one of the small perks of having your last name start with an A. :D

It certainly is a huge advantage - I even get in ahead of Asimov on recommended reading lists. Must really bug Zoran Zivkovic.

I noted while browsing here a comment about Piers Anthony, who is mostly known for his fantasy stuff. I recollect very much enjoying Of Man and Manta and wishing the guy had gone the SF route. Anyone else read it? Any opinions?

Not this one (an omnibus, wasn't it?) but I liked very much his Chthon, and Macroscope was also good old stuff.

I read 'Of Man and Manta' many years ago, its a collection of three novels, Omnivore, Orn and Ox. Something about intelligent fungi in the shape of flying manta rays? (it was a long time ago), dimensional travel and enhanced humans.

I seem to remember enjoying it, it was unusual.

Hey everyone, this is my first post other than my introduction.

I just read Titan by Stephen Baxter. I really enjoyed it and I recommend it.

Good day to you!

I haven't read that but I've read his Manifold:Time, which was pretty entertaining also.

Light of Other Days

Has anyone read Light of Other Days by Clarke (and Baxter)? Not an easy book to read, but an interesting spin on wormholes and a depressing but thought-provoking look at history and human nature.

Although it doesn't seem to be a well-read novel, Involution Ocean by William Gibson is one of my favourites.

Actually, I haven't read it. I looked the book up on ISFDB because I'd never heard it mentioned with Gibson's other works. Sorry.
