This is the second book in The Gentleman Bastard sequence and the sequel to last year's enormously acclaimed, and very successful The Lies of Locke Lamora. The full review is at my blog but a short(er) precis will follow:

The book delivers on much of the promise shown in Lies. The story is better-written and, thanks to modifications and reductions in the number of flashbacks in the story, flows much more smoothly. With the characters of Locke and Jean already established, Lynch is able to get on with telling the story, introduce new characters and show the first, barely-discernable inklings of what the series' over-arcing storyline might become. Red Seas remains a stand-alone novel, however, although reading Lies first is still recommended.

There are a few problems with the book. The story structure is very similar to that of Lies, at least to start off with. Those who have read the first novel may find themselves afflicted with deja vu for the first few chapters, although the story does take off in a totally different direction. There is also an issue with the ending of the novel: Lynch introduces some new characters from way out of left field who come in and help sort everything out. This is even more mystifying when a few paragraphs inserted at the start of the novel could have made this part of the story much more compelling. However, given that Lynch has made such huge strides in other areas of the book (particularly in the prose - which is more confident this time around - and the development of the Locke-Jean friendship as we really get inside their heads and see how reliant they are on one another), these problems can be somewhat disregarded.

In the final analysis, Red Seas is a damn fine, enjoyable read and a worthy follow-up to its acclaimed forebear.

Is there a bit more you could say about the plot? Who are the opponents? Looks like Locke and Jean will be siding with Zamira rather than against her? So with no Bondmagi who is the enemy?

Oh man, this is gonna be one long wait.

I didn't think I like people getting advance copies this early. :p

Is this time gap between a release normal, or are we just seeing an earlier than normal marketing campaign?

It's about right, I think, Gildor. (Sorry!) There's usually at least a month and often two (bekaus buk revewers reed SLOOOOOOW..... :) )

Having said that, last year prereleases of Lies were doing the rounds in January....

It is a sign of confidence (and nerve!) on the sign of the publisher that they are confident enough to have such a gap. It does allow expectations to rise and word of mouth to get around... but can be annoying for those without.

Personally, I'm amazed how the author manages to keep to these deadlines, never mind the reviewers!

I finished the book about an hour ago and I am very upset and frustrated. But that is only because the story is over and I have to wait for the next book. I'll be writing up a review and posting it soon.

The opponents are roughly analogous to Lamora: a mixture of the criminal fraternity, the nobility and the government of the city. There's also a pirate whom Jean and Locke piss off pretty massively. The Bondsmagi do not directly appear in the book, but their presence is felt several times. Zamira's relationship with Locke and Jean is 'complex' and multi-faceted. By the time the book ends you understand why Lynch wants to write some side-stories about Zamira and her crew, as they are awesome.

I just finished reading 'Red Seas' last night and have posted a review on my blog. I'm with Werthead on this one, the book isn't without its problems but is a worthy follow up to 'Lies'. 'Red Seas' also made me laugh out loud at some points, somthing which 'Lies' never quite managed.
People who are waiting for this are in for a treat! :D

Is Sabetha in this one?

Did I miss something from Lies? Or was she just away on a job.

I wasn't sure if this counted as a spoiler or not so I've blacked it out just in case...

Sabetha doesn't appear in this book although plenty of references are made to her! I think she will make an appearance in the next couple of books?

you people that get books early are evil. IF you dont want to be evil, i'll private message you my mailing address. So repent yee sinners!

Regarding Sabetha:

Book 3, The Republic of Thieves, features her first appearance both in flashback and in the present-day storyline according to Lynch. It will be out in June 2008.

How does one go about getting a copies of books in advance?
Is it a perk of being a moderator? Is SFFworld a paticularly sought after site for book reviews or do you all happen to have jobs as book reviewers?

Well, for me I just started a blog and networked and talked with other bloggers and eventually I caught a lucky break when Gollancz asked one of my colleagues for a list of good reviewers and he mentioned me.

Usually you have to blog for some time, build up a large number of regular page hits, and then you can talk to the publicity departments of various SF&F publishers and see if they'll send you review copies. If they send you one copy for free (which is usually an ARC/Advance Reader Copy and not meant for sale anyway) and two people buy the book based on your review, they're already benefitting from it.

I've done it the other way round, I emailed a bunch of publishers before starting my blog and asked if they would be willing to send me review copies of books. It's probably best to say that this approach has had varying degrees of success! Networking also helps a lot... ;)

I still say Gollancz shouldn't have sent Werthead a copy before I was done with mine!:p And to think I was the one who put them in contact with him. . .

Yeah, yeah. . .:p

I'm almost done with RSURS, by the way. I'll post my thoughts when I'm through with the book.

I finished Red Seas Under Red Skies - this one is as much fun as the first, and better written.

As I loved TLoLL, I'm eagerly looking forward to July 31.
