In order to obtain a force you need to have a value for mass and a value for acceleration.

The impact of a punch is often expressed in newtons, a unit of force. Theshow mythbusters often calbrates thier punching robots to impart a certian amount of force.

in the real world punches are complex and require knowing the masses involved, and force does't tell the whole story there is also momentum. I think my physics may be a little too rusty to calculate that.

Momentum is Mass time Velocity.

I meant the whole jumble of the physics of a fist punching another body like a head, factoring in force vectors, energy transfer and other variables. I guess I was unclear.

Thanks again for the help, JimF, I was trying to figure out what a character in my story would be humanly capable of in terms of punching power. Not for the numbers, but in terms of actual damage done.
I seem to remember that Rocky Marciano had a punch of over 900 foot pounds of 'energy'(I can learn!).
I have seen you all having some discussions in here that were fairly complex, so I figured it was worth a shot asking you. And you came through.
