Scott Lynch recently talked with Fantasy Faction. Check out the interview here!

Really interesting interview to read through. I didn’t realize that mental health issues played such a role in the series delay.

Yeah, he's been very open about it over the years. Which has made me far less impatient for the next book and a whole lot more sympathetic toward him.

Yeah, that definitely makes the gap between books make a lot more sense.

I guess I don’t tend to keep up with what’s going on with authors because this was the first time I had heard about his severe depression.

I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the pressure to be accessible to fans in the age of social media. I imagine that makes it even harder for a writer suffering from depression to meet all the demands of a modern day writer.

That was an interesting part of the discussion. As an aspiring author myself, it's been making me think of how I want to interact with my future readers. I like talking with people, and love talking about my stories, but I'm not big on posting or even reading social media. So I'll probably be someone who issues regular newsletters once a month rather than a John Scalzi posting to Blue sky a dozen plus times each day.

Tbh, I've only read part of the interview so far. I need to finish it.

Lynch at least has a fairly legitimate reason for the gap...while Rothfuss seemingly doesn't nor does GRRM.

Oh well... it isn't like other writers aren't writing great books for us to read!

What the interview does not mention is that Scott and his wife were the centre of allegations about 6 years ago similar to those of Neil G. I don't know what the outcome was, but this may have meant that he had other things to deal with rather than write, or indeed may have been a contributory factor to his depression.

It's an interesting interview because it shows some of the spark and enthusiasm Scott had back in the 2000's, but is also more contemplative and perhaps - gasp! - more adult now than some of the stuff he was putting out there 25 years ago.

We all make mistakes, we all grow as we age. Interesting. Thanks, RM, for pointing it out.
