People have been telling me for years that I was missing out on some great stories by not reading. I finally decided to see what all the fuss was about, but didn't know where to start. This site has been a tremendous resource, and it's been a very rewarding experience. I also just came off an extended stint of working nights and was having a hard time getting my sleep schedule on track. Reading has really help me unwind in the evenings just before going to sleep.
Series recommendation for a new reader.

People have been telling me for years that I was missing out on some great stories by not reading. I finally decided to see what all the fuss was about, but didn't know where to start. This site has been a tremendous resource, and it's been a very rewarding experience. I also just came off an extended stint of working nights and was having a hard time getting my sleep schedule on track. Reading has really help me unwind in the evenings just before going to sleep.
I'd finish A Darkness at Sethanon. Might have slow start but once it gets going it's a good ride if you like seiges and battles. That's if i'm remembering it correctly
I ended up choosing A Darkness at Sethanon to close out the Riftwar Saga and finished it this morning. I enjoyed the book, but not as much as the previous ones in the series. I preferred the parts that focused on Arutha, Jimmy, Martin, and company (especially the battle of Armengar).
I am now in the process of deciding my next adventure. I won't trouble you guys for more suggestions as you all have already provided me with enough options to carry me into next year
. I hope to try out most if not all the suggestions, but the hard part is deciding which to read next 
.Plenty of suggestions for GRRM and WoT I see.
However if you want to have a life besides wading through the entire rainforests worth of these books and would like something a bit shorter try David Gemmell.
His Sipstrassi Tales is a short series (about 4 books IIRC) each book less than 400 pages. Not exactly Sword and Sorcery but Jon Shannow is certainly an interesting character. The Drenai tales is a longer series but again each book tends to be in the 300 odd page range and the main characters (Druss, Waylander among others)while straight out of the fantasy book of stock characters are written with such skill that you will find yourself caring more about them than you would think possible.
