Wondering if anyone has any recommendations for space opera with horror elements? I am currently reading James SA Corey's 2nd book in the Expanse series and absolutely love the series so far. I know there are alot of space opera threads but I thought i would make a more specific thread.

THanks!

Try The Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton.

Also, one of the subplots in Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds reminded me of Alien (the movie) somehow.

Some of Alastair Reynolds' Revelations Space books/stories have horror elements. Almost all of them have gothic themes.

The most horror oriented are the novellas Diamond Dogs (I love this one), Glacial, and Nightingale. Lots of death, mutilation, body horror. There may be others but I can't come up with them off the top of my head.

Great! Thanks! Havent heard of those novellas. Definitely going to check them out. Pumped about trying the Hamilton novels too.

I haven't read Glacial or Nightingale, but Diamond Dogs is top notch. Somehow similar to the Cube movie.

May I suggest Dan Simmons Hyperion Cantos.

Certainly the first one... which is actually a set of 6 short stories that introduce the main characters in te rest of the series have many aspects of horror.

Additionally Jack Mcdevitts Slow Lightning is one very spooky book.

May I suggest Dan Simmons Hyperion Cantos.

I would say this is the definitive one.

Iain M Banks' Surface Detail is fairly horrific. There are also strong horror elements in Use of Weapons, though they're not as central to the plot until near the end.

If you're willing to go shorter than novel length, try "Black Destroyer" by A. E. Van Vogt (his "Asylum" might also fit, but it's been so long since I read it that I can't recall if it's space opera or not).

Also, a more recent example, George R. R. Martin's "Nightfliers" which you can find in one of the Dreamsongs collections. "Sandkings" isn't exactly space opera, but you may find it comes close to scratching that itch.

I haven't heard of any of these either, but will definitely be checking some out in the near future. This concept sounds really interesting. I love sci-fi horror in general. One of the big reasons I love the movie alien so much!
