Stuck on a desert island, what book do you bring?

You can pick one book, and one only, none of this garbage about bringin a bible either, 1 book only, what would you bring?
 
It would have to be Neverwhere or Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman. Probably Smoke and Mirrors... That reminds me, I need to get that book back from my brother...
 
Sorry if you think its garbage but I would take the Bibble because I have never read it and I think it would be the place to for it.

The Bible is alot of books thrown into one big volume. So you'd have to chose one particular book of the bible.

Anyway i'd take War and Peace by Tolstoy because it's the biggest single book i've seen (1200 pages I think).
I've never read it before so i'd probably end up hating it, but they're the chances you take.

BTW War and peace is pretty good, though I definatly would have preferred more war and less peace.
For Fun reading i would propably take along good omens.
 
A night in the lonesome october by Roger Zelazny.
I can't read a book more than once, that's the only book i can.
Btw, the bible is longer than War and Peace, and it's freakier.

I think you are mistaken in the fact that War & Peace is the longest single book. How about Stephen King's The Stand (Uncut version).

If my memory serves me right, it was over 1400 pages.

Is that correct FitzFlagg? Can you back me up on that tentative source?
 
Lord of the rings and i do have it one book. Only because i read it a few years ago and i cant remember a thing so it would keep me entertained for a long time.
 
For a monster sized book, how about Tad Wiliams' To Green Angel Tower in hardcover. They had to split it into 2 seperate softcovers...together they weighed in at about 1600 pages! King's The Stand would be my 2nd choice. The full Lord of the Rings would come in 3rd.

So does Fedex/UPS deliver to this hypothetical island?

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy omnibus would be my first choice. The Dark Elf Trilogy omnibus would probably be my second.

Ok, I'd probably choose to bring the ultimate in simplicity and modern allegory....The Litle Prince.

. If I'm staying for a pretty LONG time, I'd bring anything by Will Durant cuz I'm too lazy to read any of those TOMES on a normal day.
 
Bardos, the Necronomicon is a wonderful idea *smile*.

Well, of all books, I'd choose a philosophy book, and probably one of the most difficult books, so it would fascinate me very long (I think, something by Nietzsche, but this may be because at the moment I'm in kinda Nietzsche-Period - I just heard more of his theory at school and it amazes me)

If it has to be a fantasy book, I think LotR would be appropriate...

Or maybe The Collected Plays of Shakespeare... if they count, since I have them in one volume.
 
Nietzsche is not really that interesting in my opinion. I like Socrates and Aristotle much better. Nietzsche believed in one superhuman race and Hitler took some of his views from Nietzsche. I think that Hitler misinterpreted Nietzsche though to get these ideas... Either way, I still don't really like Nietzsche or Hitler.
 
Yep, that SAS Survival Handbook seems like a good bet, or a book on how to hold a successful dinner party while cooking only with roots and herbs.

I'd probly take LotR. I'd learn it off by heart, even the ickly elven poetry

and then when I was rescued I'd be regarded with awe and wonder for the mysterious quotes I could come up with at a moment's notice.

They'd probly hire me to help write the new Babylon5 - LOL! (They are guilty of using a lot of LotR quotes in the dialogue of the series, see)

Necronomicon an ancient book refered to in H.P. Lovecraft's stories. No-one knows if it really exists... but no-one knows it doesn't exist either.
