Tales of the Ketty Jay by Chris Wooding

Do it! ;)

Stephane Martiniere is gonna get going on the Iron Jackal cover soon, if he hasn't already, which should have quite a different feel to the first two (although, being by SM, it will still be recognisably similar in style). I like the US Black Lung cover too, I think both editions work well in different ways.

Them's purty aircraft!

Love that Stephan Martiniere. :)

For those not aware: UK cover:

And the US cover:

Any preferences?

The UK version draws me in a lot more. The colors, the characters being present, the sense of adventure what with the big mountains...Plus the font is much cooler.

The US one makes me think of Independence Day or some kind of alien takeover movie. Not sure why.

I prefer the UK cover, though they're both good.

I'm not sure about the cityscape on the US one. It's not quite how I pictured cities in the books, but then we haven't seen too many cities just yet.

I can't wait to see the cover for The Iron Jackal.

And I think I like the UK cover better for BLC, but the American version is still very very nice. I think I need to start reading some science fiction, maybe.

US cover art has a much better looking spaceship, but I like the fantastical looking figures of the UK cover as well, plus the UK cover has nicer typesetting. So I'd call it even.

Interested in the Martiniere cover for Iron Jackal as well.

Recent update from Wooding (last week):
http://www.chriswooding.com/maintain-holding-pattern/

Am on, er, chapter 39 of about 46 now. Bombing through it. It’ll probably be about the same length as The Black Lung Captain when I’m done – I may yet go back and cut out a chapter or two, which I’ll save for the next book. That means we’re all still looking good for an August release, as per Amazon. Speaking of Amazon, ignore the blurb they’ve put up. It’s so far beyond wrong it’s… well, I can’t think of an accurate comparison, but it’s pretty wrong. None of that stuff happens in the book.

Great news, always nice to hear that things are on track. Keep it up Chris! Can't wait to see some cover art.

I'm just now getting into this series (I've been meaning to get to it for the past year, and just had too much on my shelf), and loving it! Better late than never.

I'm definitely interested in picking this up, but I'm uncertain as to the differences between the 448 page Gollancz PB in the U.S. that's currently in print and the 480 page Spectra PB that's due in April. And I think that I heard that there might be differences with the UK version? I've been thinking of placing an order with Amazon UK, perhaps it's better just order that?

Anyone have any insights into the different editions?

There is no difference in wordage: think Chris himself pointed it out earlier in this thread.

Mark

Yeah, just typesetting differences (different line spacing, font size etc) and the usual editorial tweaks to Americanize the text, etc. However, I'm not 100% sure that the American edition has the 'Logbook Of The Ketty Jay' bonus section printed at the end like the UK edition does... although you can just read it on the net here if you like.

Thanks very much to the both of you for the responses.

I appreciate the link Mr. Wooding, but I would definitely like to own the most complete edition, so I will look to make certain that whichever version I buy has the 'Logbook' bonus section. Thanks again, and I very much look forward to trying out your book.

Good news for me: an ARC of the Spectra (US) version Retribution Falls just arrived yesterday.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it, Rob. But let us know just how much when you get around to it (which I'm sure will be right after you finish Wise Man's Fear :D).

I suggest you read something rubbish in between those two books, to make mine look better by contrast. Don't much fancy following WMF ;)

Hmm, a reasonable request. I'm reading WMF right now and it is a fantastic book. Better than BLC and Ret Falls? Well... it gives them a run for their money anyways. You'll just have to make sure that Iron Jackal is even better ;)

But I have The Fade on the way, and will be reading it next if it arrives in good time. But given bd.com's somewhat slow shipping, I just might be able to fit something rubbish in between. Any suggestions? :p
