Tales of the Ketty Jay by Chris Wooding

Oh, I could never do that to myself, not even for you Chris. *shudder*

Maybe something a little less.... godawful. Or something that's so bad its funny, rather than infuriating. But no... never again will I pick up anything by Terry "I do not write fantasy" Goodkind.

I couldn't find Retribution Falls at the library or online for purchase when I looked for it a few months ago. Exactly how many copies did Chris churn out on his printing press anyway? I need an arc of this.

Finished Retrubution Falls. Wow, that was awesome! Much better than I expected, to be honest. Frey's character arc was really refreshing and authentic, as were most of the character arcs. The similarities to Firefly became more apparent as the book went on, but frankly I thought that was a plus! The world seems really big and I'm looking forward to exploring it in later books, and seeing a lot of the bit characters return.

Only one real complaint...The female characters seem to keep getting the short end of the stick - getting sexually abused, or worse. There weren't many of them to begin with, and they don't get to have nearly as much fun as the male characters. The world of the Ketty Jay definitely seems to be a grimmer, more painful place for women than for men, and that makes it much harder to enjoy the cheerful, rollicking tone of the book's high points.

Anyway, overall, great book, and I'm looking forward to picking up Black Lung Captain!

Don't know if this is the final cover art, but here it is anyways.

That's not the final art. It was a colour saturation experiment that got leaked onto the net  Under all that neon glare is a damn fine Martiniere painting, which you'll get to see when someone takes the 80s filter off it.

Well, the rest of it looks very good to me, can only imagine how awesome it'll look with the "damn fine Martiniere paiting".

I don't know. I like the cover for the other two better. But since it isn't the final, I'll reserve judgement for now.

How is progress on The Iron Jackal coming, Chris? I saw you mentioned before that you were close to being finished the rough and thought you'd be in revision stage soon?

Cool. I have just seen this tread having finished RF just last week.

Great read, I liked it a lot. I like my protagonists to get a good kicking now and again.

I too am a unforgiving reader and have long got over feeling guilty for putting a book down and giving up half way through - last example of that was Winterbirth, by ...someone, I can't be bothered to google it to find out - and bearing in mind it can take me months to get through a book with so little time to read, it needs to hold me which it did.

I hope he gets the cr*p kicked out of him good and proper in the next two books. Any chance they'll make their way to Audible.co.uk though? I spend so much time in the car and so little time reading at home that an unabridged audio verision would be great.

Cos that cheaper paperback you're looking at isn't out till June, at which time the Kindle price will (hopefully) fall into line. Probably to £4.99 like Retribution Falls is.

Everyone gets kicked in a lot more over the next few books, naturally :D

Excellent!

What is this Chris? You delay your book, after all your promises!? Unacceptable. :p

But yeah, The Iron Jackal has been delayed until October. It's funny because I had just pre-ordered the book, and then read about the delay. I can wait an extra couple months, I guess.:)

I'm about halfway through Retribution Falls and enjoying it quite a bit. Though the beginning was good, I feel things really picked up around the 100 page mark.

I realize this thread has been in the Fantasy forum for a while now, but this has much more of a SF feel to me.

The first five chapters of Retribution Falls are up on Suvudu.com in advance of its imminent release in the US, as part of their 50 Page Fridays promotion, if anyone should care to take a free gander.

Out of respect for the forum rules, I won't post up a link, instead I shall confine myself to rumour and innuendo

Well, I finished Retribution Falls on Saturday and loved it Chris. LOVED IT. Easily will be one of my favorite 2011 books. Review to come soon-ish.

Here's that preview Chris mentioned.
