The Hobbit Movie Thread

Thing is, Jackson's last two films saw him expand a pretty simple story into an over-long epic (King Kong) and adapt a book whose point he seemed to miss (The Lovely Bones). And now he seems to be doing both with The Hobbit. There's plenty here to be apprehensive about.

Not true!

The majority of the design work was finished before GDT left the project. He had a lot of input on it, and it sounds like they're still going to use most of it (Smaug, for example). The truth is, there's simply no time to redesign anything even if they wanted to. You will still see much of GDT's "vision" on the screen, which I agree would be a good thing. I was particularly excited to see GDT's re-design of the wargs. I hated Jackson's wargs, and GDT said he would make them look more like traditional wolves of Scandinavian mythology. Hopefully that's still the case.
 
Has anyone heard when the first "part" is supposed to end at?

I would think the arrival at Smaugs lair, or maybe they close the first film with Bilbo casting his first gaze on the sleeping Smaug, in all his glory with the Arkenstone possibly winking in the light, then we cut to "to be continued":p

I mean, they aren't going to do the whole Hobbit story in one film and the 2nd be entirely the "filler" between Hobbit and LOTR they keep talking about?
 
Gandalf leaving Bilbo and the dwarves at the edge of Mirkwood seems like a good spot.

That's not bad either! With the Lonely Mountain looming in the background, as the camera cuts back.


Someone mentioned Bloom, I would have no problem with him being the Mirkwood Elf king (though he'd have to channel his inner disdainful elf, how he interacts with the dwarves).

Too bad about Rhys Davis not wanting to do it again-would have made perfect sense be Gloin-playing his own "sire" :D

The Mirkwood elf king is Thranduil, the father of Legolas. So Legolas won't play the king, but he could very well still be there as a prince.
 
Filming Begins March 21

Well, filming is finally set to begin on March 21. It was supposed to start this month, but has been delayed because of Peter Jackson's recent stomach ulcer surgery. He's back home now, recovering.
 
Get your geek on - this is so exciting. B/W this and the Game of Thrones series, fantasy fans have lots of coolness to look forward to.
 
An Unexpected Party

Here's a photo of the titular Hobbit and all thirteen dwarves (taken at a press conference today).

Also, according to news from the press conference, the movie will stay true to the books in that the dwarves will be singing. :)
 
Filming begins today!

Production has FINALLY and OFFICIALLY begun, on The Hobbit!

Good to see PJ actually looking enthusiastic about this. There was a definite air of, "Well, if nobody else wants to direct it, I guess I'll do it," for a while.

Still not thrilled with the two movies, but more stuff like this will probably wear that down.
 
Casting News

Stephen Fry has joined the cast of the Hobbit. He will be playing the Master of Laketown. I love Stephen Fry, and am thrilled by this news!

Also of note, Conan Stevens (who plays Ser Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane in HBO's Game of Thrones) has been cast as the orc Azog (who started the war between the orcs and the dwarves). Awesome!

Which means we're probably going to get a lengthy flashback to how Thorin got the name Oakenshield.

There's also a made-up character named Alfrid who is the Master of Laketown's conniving assistant, which means we're probably getting some kind of extended shenanigans there.

Not too thrilled about this.

Yes, but it will beg the point as to why Thranduil acted as he did when his son is so much nicer and more level headed.
