Things you hate to see in an sffworld thread

Five pages of threads, dating back almost four years -- yeah, there was probably some repetition. :)
 
Probably. But I guess one of the goals of the forum reorganization, at least in my mind, was to keep discussion fresh and new. Granted people are always, always, going to come here and their first topic will be the oh-so-revolutionary What Can I Read Next/Give Me Some Recommendations, Dammit! thread.
 
Does that mean you'd rather we start new threads instead of searching for and posting in the old ones? Because I could get behind that.
 
I think that a lot of the problem with the author forums would be resolved if vBulletin allowed for multiple tag search criteria. It's unfortunate that you can't search by "Martin" and "Wild Cards" to limit the tag searching even more. Of course, this is an overly simple example and you could search by the tag "Wild Cards" (if such a tag exists, which it probably does) but once vBulletin updates so you can have multiple tag search criteria it will be much better.

Another problem IMO is that if i want to search GRRMartin, there are 3 or 4 tags for him, with differing content...there is a George RR Martin tag, a Martin tag, a ASOIAF tag and A Song of Ice and Fire tag....similar problem exists for Robert Jordan and others....
So if i want to see stuff on GRRM I have to look at all tags to make sure i haven't missed one, and it's painful.
Can we bring back the author tags or is it just way too hard?
 
Although this isn't going to be a long post, I believe it is very much on topic for this thread.

Something that I hate to see in any sffworld thread: Political discussions...I believe somewhere in the rules it is stated that politics shouldn't be discussed on the site.

It really irks me...especially when people come here for books, not to argue over Obama and McCain you know?:mad:

We put in the multiple tags thinking that different people might search for different tags, but all of the Martin tags (martin, george r.r. martin, grrm) are on every martin thread, for example.

Our basic policy on politics and religion in the literature forums is that if these topics come up, and they are kept relevant to the thread topic and related to SFFH literature, and if people are civil in discussing such issues, then we'll allow it. Or if it's a quick mention, we usually let it pass. In the Other Media forums, we'll allow more discussion of these topics, again as long as everyone is civil. And in general discussion, politics and religion are okay subjects again as long as everyone is civil and doesn't do personal attacks. Lastly, in the special author forums moderated by the authors themselves, religion and political discussions are allowed if the author wants them.

But if people are getting off-topic about a political discussion that doesn't have anything to do with literature, say, in the literature forum, or you think a discussion is getting too nasty and personal, please do alert someone on the staff about the matter, and we'll look into it.
 
It wouldn't have been so hard to find, if the author sub-forums hadn't been removed.

I agree. With subforums, you could talk about things too specific for the general forum. It was a bad idea to remove them.
 
yeah, too bad we can't easily access, and continue, all those topics like before with only 3 clicks.

Oh. That's right. We still can.

Search->Tag Search->Jordan.

Is that so hard guys? Or why not even just bookmark this link so you don't ever have to see pesky non-Jordan threads?
 
Tagging isn't as reliable, one can easily miss a thread and even though I've been here for a long time I have no clue how to tag anything so it becomes associated. Is there a FAQ for that somewhere? I clicked on the tag "tags" and got nothing that looked specific.
 
Hi Bond,
At the bottom of each thread page is the tag section - to the right of this is a link named "Edit Tags" which allows any members to add tags to a thread.
The admins and some volunteers have retrospectively tagged a large number of threads and are continuing to do so, of course the more that members also tag threads the more reliable a mechanism it becomes.
 
OK folks, it's been about 3 months since the changes and we've jumped into 2009. I've seen a bit of grumbling about recently about the loss of the author forums any other thoughts? Is it working out OK?

Yeah, it was so much fun talking to myself, making a post that wouldn't get a reply for a month. He posts here and he gets 8 replys in one day.
 
Despite the bitching in that WoT thread, I like it. Never was a big fan of the sub forums as the traffic in the main forum really dropped off when they were created. I like it busy here.:)

Nice to see you have gone soft on the new peeps asking for recs too:)

To many Sticky Topics though. The monthly reading thread gets enough traffic to stay on the front page. No need to sticky it imo. Two or three sticky's isn't to bad but when you have more plus two announcements they just take up to much space at the top.

Except for all the posts have been about Author Sub-Forums and using the search function. Nothing substantial about the original question.
