Thanks for this, Cicero! Will check out Howard. Somehow I thought Connan was by E.R. Burroughs, lol. Don't know why I thought that exactly. Byw, do you like Burroughs? How'd you compare him with Howard? I guess he's more sci fi, but some of his works seem to have a connanesque vibe...
Btw, agree about CA Smith, one of my favorite writers... IMO above Lovecraft (also good in certain ways)
Howard and Burroughs were contemporaries and given that Howard was an A very avid reader, and well read probably had an influence on Howard. But overall, Howard is the better writer. in terms characterization story telling . Howard wrote fantasy , Horror , some science fiction Historical non fantasy adventure stories. westerns , detective stories , fight stories . In his relatively brief career as writer 1924 to 1936 , he was quite prolific. The sad part is had he not committed suicide at age 30 , he'd have become an ever better writer . I think it likely he would abandoned fantasy , science fiction and horror in favor of Detective stories and Westerns but, I think that eventually, he might come back to genres from his early career of Fantasy , Science Fiction and horror .
