I bet lots of people are wondering who really is the better man: Tolkien or Jordan. I'm asking everyone to at least vote, but not exactly to post a reply. (You can if you want.) Now don't vote Tolkien just because he's the oldest and he started it all; this is the writing, the characters, the story, exc. I'm curious as to how this will go...

*cough* Martin! *cough*

But out of the two I would chose Tolkien. I really enjoy his lavish desriptions and characters. Not to mention all of the poems that I eat up. (others despise them)

Man, I have NEVER forced myself to choose, and this is a tough one.

I adore Tolkien. The Council of Rivendell and all those great speechs, Helms Deep, when the Lord of the Nazgul uses Grond to smash in the gates of Minas Tirith, the glory of the Simarillion....it goes on and on....

Yet I will pick Jordan

ps Will have to check out this Martin character...

this is only a good fight if you can bear either one of these authors... which I cannot. Entirely too wordy and detailed. It's fantasy...let me fill in the blanks. But if I have to chose... I'll chose TOlkien, because at least I can wade through his description without falling asleep.

Cadfael enters the topic... a huge baseball bat held in his hand... he then begins to tap the floor with it....

... :D

.. Just letting you know.... be nice! If this all goes pear shaped... I will get very annoyed.

Seriouisly... I would like to see how the poll pans out... just no bashing.. please.

Robert Jordan.
I prefer his world, his characters, especially the villains and even his style.
The only plus of Tolkien is that he finished "Lord of the Rings", but it is hardly surprising - he is dead after all:p

This reminds me of the comparisons that Sports writers always talk about. Like If Muhommed Ali in his prime fought Mike Tyson in his prime, or the Super Bowl Champion's The Miami Dolphins played the World Champion Denver Broncos. I honestly love to think about those kinds of battles, and in part coming from the world of fantasy where writers such as Jordan or Tolkien could have conjured a plot to where Mike Tyson fought the Denver Broncos, I'm easy pickens for an opinion.

I really do love both authors but I must give a nod to the old world fantasy master, the father of this genre I tip my hat in Tolkien's direction while I wink in Jordan's.

Hey Enazwo,

Here's a question. Do you think that Robert Jordan could have written as good a story fifty years ago? Vice versa... do you think that JRRT could write such a tale today?

I would have to lean on Tolkein on that question.

It's Tolkien for me, too. Perhaps only because I'm more familiar with him than with Jordan, I started reading Jordan 1 Year ago, and I've known and loved Tolkien for almost 12 years now...I think there could be another reason for my boredom with Jordan - he repeats himself through 9 books so far, Tolkien finished his masterpiece in three volumes, with quite some suspense in it...

Why can't vote? Your opinion matters!

I know my opinion matters, but I never can vote on polls. It always gives me somekind of error message, it started a couple of months ago. I have been too lazy to ask an admin, though, so I guess it is my own fault.

But yeah, Tolkien is better than Jordan, but I don't really like either too much.

No no no - he wrote book one of WoT. Eddings and Goodkind wrote the others.

Regardless of which, it's still good!

I can't cast this vote. I guess technically Tolkien is better - but he didn't half go on some, some of the time, and i only read The Hobbit and LotR of his - the rest i found too dull. But i've already enjoyed twice that many books of Jordan's - i think i'll hold off til i get to bk 9, or whatever it is that's out so far, and then vote :)

DIDN'T HALF GO ON SOME...

You're comparing him to a guy 9 or 10 books into a fraggin' series... now THAT is long winded.

BTW... I'm not shouting at you Sammie, stop pouting... Come here and hug.
