Read two sci-fi books a long time ago (think 20 years minimum), by different authors and now am trying to find them again. Don't remember authors or titles; but sharing the little information about the plots, which I remember. Hope that, some one has a clue. So here goes:

1) Plot of Novel 1: There is a space war going on between two human empires; the protagonist is a young captain of a space submarine. Well, apparently they were small boats and preferred doing their hunting from ambushes. The name of the submarine was Mukhbarat (not exactly sure about this). The submarine had been on quite a few war patrols, achieved successes; but on one of the patrols was almost destroyed by the destroyer escort of the convoy attacked. The captain was quite upset about it to his senior admiral, apparently the stealth technology provided was making the submarine more visible. The last chapter had the admiral musing on the progress of war, and regretting the loss of the highly promising captain, whose submarine had not returned from a war patrol.

I remember this detail, as apparently it was based on experiences of German U-Boats, and the radars they were assigned to protect them against aircraft.

2) Plot of Novel 2: There is a secret organization existing within the space navy of a human federation (galaxy spanning). The very young protagonist is a final year cadet in the space academy. He is summoned to the Commandant's office, where he is made an offer to join the society. On his agreeing, he is sent to the next room, where he meets his father after a good many years. The father disappeared after a scandal leaving the wife and son behind. Apparently the wife was terminally ill, and the father was recruited for the same organization. He is an admiral there and senior officer (2nd or 3rd in line). The protagonist is then told that, to join the organization he has to disappear and was then drummed out of the academy after being falsely accused of cheating. Apparently only officers above the rank of rear admiral and above know about the organization and its official status. The protagonist was selected / hired as has the ability to see / hear through eyes and ears of animals; and do a bit of mind reading.

The protagonist is then sent to a world, where he has to investigate a series of strange happening. He manages to penetrate the ring by helping a criminal, who is targetting someone. Then proceeds to move higher the rungs, it turns out that the Prime Minister of the world is an alien, who is trying to bring about a revolution by manufacturing advanced weaponry on a secret world.

In the last chapter or so, the protagonist is kidnapped and is being tortured. In order to escape, the protagonist summons the native wasps (earth bee type thing); and has them Prime Minister and his goons stung to the death, He then uses, a pigeon to enter the room of the admiral commanding the federal military garrison and types in "Andra 7" on his secretary's type writer (???). Apparently "Andromeda 7" is a code word used to identify the operatives to the senior military; and it means immediate action is required to whomever the word is told. The admiral leads marines to the rescue, and they bring in the bodies. End of story.

So does the above jogs anyone's memories?? Is this enough? Would like to read them again. So help appreciated. Thanks

I believe your first book is Passage at Arms by Glenn Cook. Space subs are called "climbers" and it was honestly one of the greatest stories I've ever read.

If it is Passage at Arms, the book is part of the Starfishers series by Cook.

Hi Aldroud / KatG,

Got "Passage At Arms", and gave it a quick read. No, the book am trying to find is not Passage At Arms. PAA is more like "Das Boot" in Space than anything else.

Thanks for the heads up and the enjoyment.

Regards
