[Hobbit]

A grittier cousin to the more recent British show MERLIN.

Oh, it is SO much better than Merlin, IMO....

The writer was a man named Richard Carpenter, who also wrote before that a series called Catweazle for British television, which is also fondly remembered.

In Robin of Sherwood he cleverly managed to combine the Robin Hood myth with pagan elements (see Hearne the Hunter). It's a series that works on different levels and is much more than the children/family status suggests.

Honest point: I was usually watching Doctor Who on "the other side" - BBC- when Robin of Sherwood was first on. But I watched repeats and have them now on Bluray. They hold up pretty well. Yes, there's a comedy-ish Sheriff of Nottingham (pre-Alan Rickman), though he's not quite as bumbling as he appears at first, but the cast is brilliant. I was amazed how many I recognised who have gone on to bigger and greater things.

I would recommend the first two seasons with Michael Praed especially - the last season with Jason Connery (yes- that Connery family) is not quite as good, but the scripts are still great. And that Clannad music which veers from 80's synthesiser music to brilliant vocals!

Whereas Merlin tried to be a more modern version of the King Arthur from the BBC. I struggled with it, mainly remembering the "chainmail" that was basically grey woolly jumpers... some good acting but the scripts were not a patch on the Carpenter ones IMO.

Rick and Morty is back. S5 was a little dissappointing overall, but I'm still happy its back. Started with S6 ep 2 for some reason, and its a Die Hard tribute episode. Very good, had me smiling! (The post-credits segment fell flat, because WTF remembers Die Hard 3 lol.) (Watched ep 1 after, not as strong.)

I'm watching House of the Dragon as it comes out. So far, so good. It's still missing a Tyrion type character though. I'm holding off on the Rings show until it's all available.

I think he may just mean the first season. I do that, too. Same with HotD; I don't want to watch an episode or two and then have to wait. I'll get it all then binge-watch it. Ah, the old days, when it was "tune in next week" and you had to wait!

VERY rainy Sunday led me to bingewatching the entire 1st season of Wheel of Time Can't say it's a great series - dialogue is too awkward for that, some sequences are very much rushed whilst others take up too much time...but there is enough to like! Had not expected liking WoT better than RoP...

I think Martin wrote the prequel? Did he write a whole story, or is it going to be the same kind of nonsense with GoT?

Are you referring to Wheelie of Time, sorry Waste of Time sorry WHEEL of Time? Cos I don't see Martin (assume you mean he of the four initials?) involved in it at all. Think it would be odd for a writer so well known for his own successful series, and with one on air as we speak, to participate in the writing of the series based on books by another famous author?

Martin has written a number of novelettes and novellas that are the basis of House of the Dragon. I've read a couple. One, The Rogue Prince, is contained in Rogues, a 21 piece anthology co-edited by Martin.

Interestingly, the collection also contains a novelette by a SFF World participant, Matt Hughes. Rogue covers the buildup to the family war over the succession. That alone includes enough material to take at least a couple of seasons of dramatize - assuming that they stick to the written version.

A longer treatment, including the "Dance of the Dragons" the war between claimants to the throne is contained in Fire & Blood, a set of stories that covers a more complete history of the Targaryen family.
Martin gradually parted from the filming of the original series and reportedly was not happy with the writing in its last episodes. He has stated that this series will be more what he imagined.

I am still waiting for any/some of the characters in the current series to develop personalities, which was for me what put the action into some perspective. I hope that House will do more than fire and blood.

So, I am currently watching "Soap" on Tubi. This was a late seventies, early eighties comedy spoof of American soap operas. Very funny and surprising in the things they got away with back then. This is definitely part of my youth. Also started a rewatch of Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex. I love all the Ghost in the Shell iterations, including the Netflix series.

Last night:

Kremen (Flint) (2012) Episode 1. Low-ish budget Rambo knock-off, although the cops are corrupt, so there is an element of justice. Good fight scenes, if you like that sort of thing. It's a Russian series.

Watched Episode 5 of The House of Dragon (sadly last with the current young actresses in the main roles of the Princess and the Queen) and I enjoyed it most of the episodes so far as it had everything one wants in a GoT universe episode including a wedding that well, it's game of thrones and we know what happens at famous weddings there.
More controversial scenes, this time mainly because they were not included or done differently in the original material from what I saw in perusing true believers forums but as I noted earlier, the so-called original material is super boring so I am all for dramatic changes that make for superb TV like in this episode.
I also liked how various characters' comments felt natural while explaining the import of this or that detail as again I (and probably most viewers) am not versed in the minutiae of the universe and for example when the Queen made a big entrance show dressed all in green, I got the big entrance thing sure, especially how she humiliated the king who was in the midst of announcing another hundred years of peace and prosperity, but didn't really get the green until a conversation mentioning how that green is the color of the Queen's family war banners...
Anyway, great performances all around and hopefully the new actresses will be as good as the younger ones.
