TV Series or Show You're Watching

I saw a very good one (don't think it was that one) where the idea was that the Martians had been infected/taken over/compromised by some virus or parasite which made them invade Earth, and they were in fact trying to warn us not to fall prey to the same fate. Clever.

Today I watched the two part Going Postal which is based on the DiscWorld Novel by Sir Terry Prachett (who makes a cameo appearance at the end of the second episode). This amazing adaptation was released in 2010, and consists of two hour and a half episodes. It is available for “Freevee” streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

It’s an amazing production and has lots of great actors, including David Suchet as the villain, and Charles Dance as Lord Vetinari. The story features a the con-man, Moist Von Lipwig (played by Richard Coyle) who has been sentenced to hang for his crimes. Lord Vetinari makes him a deal he can’t refuse (if he wants to continue to live). He is to reopen the decrepit Ankh Morpork Post Office, and make it a viable operation again. He has only two postal employees and some golems to accomplish this task. Hilarity ensues!

This is a comedy, fantasy, romance, with steam-punk elements. It is of course heartwarming, and has a positive message. It’s an adaptation of a beloved work, and I think they did it well.

Finished Masters of the Air, which was good, but not as good as Band of Brothers or Pacific, I'm afraid.

Rattled through an unexpectedly good series: The Furies, on Netflix. Think of it as a French version of John Wick. I did watch an English-dubbed version, which will not be for everyone, but I didn't find the dubbing too jarring. Violent but well-done action scenes.

Have now watched 5 episodes of 3 Body Problem in 2 days, which for me is a bingewatch - something I don't do these days (I prefer to space them out 1 per day.) Really enjoying it, though I know some have said there's issues with the programme, the producers and the writer.....

Episode 5 has an event in it that I don't remember in the book but is very much the sort of thing the producers would do. Quite horrifying - really needs the Mysterons around to help....

I actually put off watching it straight away due to the uneven reviews - but tonight two episodes in and think it's great so far!

Am now on Episode 7. Honestly can't remember how close it is to the book. (Don't think its that close!) but I am enjoying it, and will finish it today. I'm seeing it as an SF series for those who don't usually watch SF - the science isn't too mind blowing but there are elements that are genuinely exciting/horrifying.

Anyone into those historical/period pogrammes? I know I am. I've made no secret of my love for The Onedin Line, and I'm currently watching Poldark, for the first time, even if it is a new version. Currently watching the 2024 version of Shogun and it’s pretty good two episodes in. There’s an official behind the scenes podcast that I started listening to as well. It seems it will be one season only, and track the ending in the 1975 novel. It apparently took a lot of efforts to try to be historically correct where it could be while adapting a work of fiction. Lots of effort went into consuming and sets.

Well it was a decent take on descent into madness that you normally only experience in novel form. 1st half and the set up/rising sense of dread was stronger than the 2nd half when things get funky. Then again, even Jaws struggled when the monster was revealed.

Worth a watch, though for for me John Carpenter's 'The Thing' and 'They Live' are the tier above this one.

Finished the six episodes of Dark Winds second season, from last year. It's a re-shaping of some elements of Tony Hillerman's Navaho Tribal Police mysteries. For me and for Miz Pogo it is a greatly welcomed re-telling of the well read Hillerman opus. One of the things that we loved in the books was the evocation of the landscape as well as of the people. The events make it very dark. but the acting as well as the setting made it binge watching for us.
Of special note for me were a few of the actors of an overall special cast.
  • Zahn McClarnon as Joe Leaphorn
  • Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito
  • Deanna Allison as Emma and
  • Nicholas Logan as Colton Wolf
Jeri Ryan is notable in a supporting role. It was produced by George RR Martin and Robert Redford,
both southwest friends of Hillerman. It's on AMC. Saw it on a library DVD.

Just finished Season 1 of Slow Horses on AppleTV+ and I liked it more than I expected. It’s comedic at times, dramatic at times, and really dark at times. It’s about a group of MI5 agents who have been put out to pasture for various reasons, but they somehow still end up involved in operations.

Season 1 involves a storyline of trying to locate and recover a Muslim student who has been kidnapped by white supremacists. These guys intend to execute the student and livestream it on video. There’s a bit of world building going on in this Season, which may not be needed next Season. Looks like that Season 2 & 3 are available now, with more planned.
