These are further adventures of established well known not so well known characters created by writers. Continued by other writers . This is my definition of it and I don't know if it's an adequate description of what a pastiche really is.

What are your thought on the concept of pastiches and what are you favorite ones? :)

Ohh, this is a tough one. I, in general, avoid reading stuff continued on by another author. Would Brandon Sanderson's work be considered a pastiche of Wheel of Time? Not read then though, I fell off that series well before he took over.

I did like Robert Jordan's Conan stories, but I've not read them recently since reading Howard's complete Conan run, they might not hold up as well in a direct comparison. There are lots of Lovecraft imitators, not sure if they can be considered pastiches. Though Robert R. McCammon's "Fall of the House of Usher" sequel was fun, I was still in high school when I read it and my recollection of it is highly suspect.

These days it seems like most pastiches are "hidden" with the co-author illusion. The numerous Tom Clancy spin-offs, etc. Do I like Larry Bond's newer stuff with a co-author as much as his older stuff presumably totally written alone? Hard to say, my tastes have changed a bit. But I think the earlier works were better.

Not read much of the Lustbader Bourne, but they seemed comparable to Ludlum. Gardner wrote some outstanding Bond novels, far better than the later work of Fleming IMHO. But some of this type of stuff is just more modern or more influenced by successful films so I think it appeals more.

Comics are probably the supreme example of the pastiche, characters grow and develop over DECADES of collaborative work. There is a weird melding of old and new, parallel storytelling, alternate versions, and over time the mythology of the characters evolves in odd ways.

Jason there are three Pastiches that you might find of interest

Conan Road of Kings by Karl Edward Wager . This is an excellent book.
Bran Mak Morn Legion of the Shadow also by Karl Edward Wagner Its a pastiche of another Howard character but this book is an excellent fantasy novel in't own right.

Also Conan the Rebel by Poul Anderson. Tthis is a prequel to Howard's story Queen of the Black Coast and it's quite good.

The Last Ringbearer might fit in here. Don't know if this necessarily qualifies as a pastiche, but I think it might be in the ball park. It's a kind of sequel from a different point of view to LOTR. It paints Mordor in a more positive light. I wouldn't say it's a favorite of mine, but it is an interesting read.

I like the cheese and onion ones but sometimes I prefer the traditional Cornish ones :)

Sherlock Holmes and the Servants of Hell by Paul Kane It's set in Clive barker Hellraise universe.

That one will likely never see wide print given the story and setting and the Tolkien Estate not allowing other writers to do books and stories set in Tolkien's Middle Earth.

I just downloaded a bunch of fan fiction based on the Vorkosigan Saga yesterday. Scott Washburn does it really well.

Sherlock Holmes and the Shadwell Shadows by James Lovegrove in this one Shelock Homes and Dr Watson battle the minions of Cthulhu .

Escape From Loki by Joe Phillip Farmer His first and only Doc Savage novel . Its origin story in which a you Mark Savage jr meets the men who become his five companions and go on their fort adventure. It's a pretty good read and . I wish Farmer had written more of these books.:)
