What comics are you all reading? What do you think?

I've been reading and enjoying the first four issues of Joe the Barbarian. The series is written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Sean Murphy. I pretty much love everything about this series. Joe is the ultimate sympathetic character, and the fantasy world of the Iron Kingdom, where toys come to life, and there are midget pirates, is amazing.

I'm totally hooked on these comics, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next four issues.

CB - I know you gave up on Unwritten but I've just read #12 and it's possibly the best comic I've read all year. It can be read on it's own if you can find it and are inclined.

I re-read my uber Warren Ellis collection of Gravel stories called Never A Dull Today yesterday, the Gravel character is fantastic, the separate story arcs don't suffer from being b/w and it's Ellis madness at its best. Pity the latest collections are so damn expensive, which is about my only gripe with Avatar these days.

@ Kater- thanks for the tip. I'll be heading over to the comic shop Saturday as it is, so I'll take at look for issue 12 while I'm there.

I've been back at it with Preacher. Read the third volume, Proud Americans the other day. I felt like this was the weakest volume so far. I liked the Vietnam story at the beginning, but Cassidy's origin story was pretty underwhelming. It didn't seem to fit with his character, and I thought the way he got bit was pretty lame.

The scenes in France with the Grail were great though. I loved hating D'Aronique. Good ending, good middle, weak ending.

I found volumes 5 and 6 used the other day, but I still don't have volume 4, so I need to remedy that real quick-like.

I have begun my annual re-read of Transmetropolitan, it never fails to make me laugh and is so full of ideas that other writers would make whole series out of, but Ellis just throws away. Probably my favourite all time series, I've certainly never gone back to anything else anywhere near as many times.

Haven't actually read it yet...I'm knee deep in The Judging Eye by R. Scott Bakker, and all my reading time has been devoted to that...I'll be getting to my FCBD haul early in the week though, so I'll be sure to let you know!

Alrighty, look forward to it.

I was really not impressed with Iron Man & Thor. The artwork looked befitting of a child at school, not a professional release from one of the top comic firms.
World of Aspen was just a breast-fest as usual, so no complaints.
Artifacts didn't get much of a read, although there's not much to read. Seemed more like an advert than a decent read.
Weathercraft was just... Never again.

Really enjoyed Deadpool Corps, though. Well, it's Deadpool ;)

@Dwagginz- I read Atomic Robo. It was pretty funny in a silly kind of way. There was a few good one-liners in it though.

The Sixth Gun was awesome. The baddies in it seem pretty terrible, and the "good" guys not much better. The cool things is that it was the entire first issue, so I got a really good taste. The title hits stores in July, with a 1st/2nd issue combo, so I'll be looking forward to that.

Irredeemable was pretty solid too. The first issue is a bit of a tease though, as they drop into the middle of the events in progress, so there are a lot of mysteries left unanswered...I suppose this is meant to draw me in, which kinda worked...I might look for the first trade at the library.

I've been following this because I was interested by what Mark Waid would do unfettered by continuity chains at DC or Marvel. It seems to follow the line of recent superhero deconstruction stories, The Mighty, Supergod or even Waid's other title Incorruptible for instance. What happens when a superhero/god looses control. It started well for me but has recently fallen into the trap of being an ongoing, needing to keep teasing and hinting, bringing in more new characters without ever getting somewhere. I thought these were the things Waid would be avoiding but he hasn't seemed able so far. It isn't a bad read by any stretch and the first 8-10 issues are solid but personally I've started to drift away from it. Player's choice I guess.

I'm thinking about trying to obtain some TPBs, it could be a good laugh.

@Kater; Mark Waid did some work for Crossgen, who sadly folded a few years back. He worked on Saurians and possibly some other stuff, and they published Sojourn which is one of my favourite comic series :D Small world, eh?

Yeah, obviously he's been around both the big houses for a while, did a really interesting interview on Warren Ellis' Come In Alone column years back, after which I kept an eye out for his stuff. I think he's realising now that he didn't really capitalise on the huge success of his Flash and Cap America runs in the early 90's along with the monster that was Kingdom Come, so now he's doing his own thing. Something I'd love to see more of the big names do.

Waid got shafted twice by Marvel - once on his terrific run on Captain America for the silly Heroes Reborn event and again on Fantastic Four. Fan uproar was so loud with the FF thing that he and Mike Wieringo were immediately brought back on.

I am reading the "SUPERMAN " comic book. In this matter i am children.

Just picked up Fables:Legends in Exile TPB (I think its called that anyway). I previously read 1001 nights (again I think it was something like that). Really enjoyed the fairy tale universe living in NY in exile. Cool stuff. Good writing and solid artwork.

Fables is amazing, I'm a huge fan, it's one of those comics you just scratch your head trying to figure out how the writer (Bill Willingham) came up with the idea. Did you find 1001 Nights confusing DD? Legends in Exile is the first collection whereas 1001 Nights takes place around the seventh so you may be jumping around the story a bit :)

I've been reading Warren Ellis' Ultimate Galactus over the weekend, as always he makes superhero comics interesting, the artwork in the three collections is stunning but it's the ideas in the story that work best for me. I wish all capes and tights stuff was this good.

Kater - There was just enough detail on the cover (or somewhere) that I was able to read it as a stand alone. It whetted my appetite for the rest of the Fables universe though and I finally picked up this one. One of the things I really liked about 1001 nights was that each story was drawn by a different artist.

I think I have found a new series to immerse myself in.

Daddy Darth, Fables is a great series. Like you, I picked up Legends in Exile about 2 months ago. I've now read all 13 collections. Very addictive stuff. Mark Buckingham, who is the books regular penciler, took over from Lan Medina with the 2nd collection; Animal Farm. I'd be interested to see how you found the artists compared. I personally prefer Buckingham now, but I think that's because I became so used to him. There's only about 3 artists who I believe draw the characters the way Willingham writes them. Medina & Buckingham are 2 of them.
