What does everyone think of James Barclay?

It's not all that exciting. I could wish it was something like 'Krell, Lord of the Universe.' But it is not. It is short and sweet.

Jibs

Don't ask me why cos I don't know. A mate of mine gave it to me when I was seven and his has stuck with my old school mates even to this day.

I should have pushed the NOM idea harder.

NOM
Would Jibs be an abbrevation ? and if it is I would guess your middle name begins with I

Lol you could still push NOM.
You really would like 'Krell, Master of the Universe'?? Its just a bit of a mouthful.

Actually, it's not an abbreviation. My middle name doesn't begin with an 'i'. It's Richard as it happens. I don't know how it came about really but it was one of those playground things when names were handed out that had the merest relation to reality. At least there's a J and a B in there.

I've gone off Krell now... By the way, just as meagre interest, NOM came about because in my misspent youth in amusement arcades, when I got a high score, I entered the three letters allowed to go on the high score table. JRB is spread all over the screen and often, there was a time limit to enter the letters. NOM is all good and close together.

Thought I had read all the Raven books, but I haven't read Light Stealer.I've ordered it from Amazon but it isn't going to arrive for 6-8 weeks

As good a reason as any to choose it. And you hardly say misspent youth, if you don't regret it? Colourful youth maybe

Light stealer is hard to get a hold of it seems.

Light Stealer isn't actually about The Raven. It is set some 300 years before and is a novella about Septern, the man who invented the spell, Dawnthief. It's difficult to get hold of because its published by a small publishere. You may have more luck going to their website: www.pspublishing.co.uk

Cheers

It's the top marque copy... thanks. You get a couple of signatures for that too. And the hardbacks are a numbered limited edition. Look after it well (and let me know what you think).

My copy of Light Stealer arrived today,as I've been waiting for it to arrive I will put the Wounded Land aside and start it.Thanks for reccomending PS Publishing NOM as my copy is a signed limited edition with only 300 hard back editions published.

Hey NOM:

When are you going to cross the pond? Since I'm a hardback collector, I'd really like to pick your series up at book one, like bantam is doing with Erikson.

on edit: changed horribly annoying size :)

I would jus like to say if your a fan of Barclay then Light Stealer is a must read.

Dr B - as soon as I can get a US deal. I have a great agent now in the States and we'll be working together very soon on trying to get my new stuff and The Raven into print in the US. That's it right now but the more people who want my books in the US and say so, the better my chances of securing a deal sometime.

Thanks for your interest by the way - much appreciated.

magze - got your PM. Thanks very much for your comments. As to the length of Light Stealer, that was the commission. A novella's typical maximum size is about 25,000 words and it's part of the discipline to tell a coherent story within that framework. Glad it didn't spoil your enjoyment.

Do you have a specific person we can send those "I want"s to? I've said it before, and I'll say it a few more times if I need to. But if I can have a specific person to send my "I want"s to, maybe it would help. Or we could just start an official SFFWorld petition or something. Let us know what to do to best help out, and we'll be happy to.

Even though I have the PBs of the UK Raven books, I would still buy the US Hardcovers when they publish.

Thanks for the quick reply-

I would be happy to drop an email to anyone to further the cause. Just pm me one. Squeaky wheels, as they say.

Hey NOM, I know this off-topic, but have you seen the proposed cover for the new Gemmell novel due in September?

The new series sounds interesting:

The Emperess of Estorea is young and idealistic. The Empire she has inherited has never been more powerful, never been so large. She believes she can bring in a golden age. But her armies are stretched thin, the border provinces are reluctant to pay homage and, even in her own court, dissent and betrayal is in the air. And into this troubled world four children are born. They are the result of centuries of careful study and selective breeding. They are completely at one with the world, they can sense the elements, they can use them. They have magic at their fingertips. A world that has not known magic is about to discover its wonder and its terror. And an Empire is about to fall. No epic fantasy has dealt with the arrival of magic into a previously non-magical world. James Barclay, with his perticular gift for characterisation and vivid description of both magic and action is the ideal author to tell this story for the first time. This is a breakthrough fantasy from one of the UK's most exciting talents.

Will be interesting to read NOM's work outside of Balaia and the Raven.

P.S. Sorry image is so big, couldn't get the smaller one to work!

Wulfa -jones can I just say don't apologise for the size of the cover, you got my heart jumping up and swinging off my lolling tongue. :)
Its not even on his site yet.
Now all I left to say is: I want it...
