What FANTASY book did you find hard to finish?

It never ceases to amaze me that people find Lord of the Rings difficult! First of all, it's WAY SHORTER than most Fantasy series out there. Secondly, even when it's at a long slow part (ie. Frodo and Sam crossing Mordor, which I agree is one of the harder parts) I find I just relax, trust to Tolkien's beautiful language, and enjoy each sentence one at a time. Before you know it you're almost done! You don't need to feel any pressure to finish it quickly.

As for Heresy, if you're having trouble finishing Jordan's 4th book, all I can say is you might as well stop now! I'm not sure if you know, but most people think the quality drops off DRASTICALLY after book 6, and he's now put out 10 books (the last 2 or 3 being particularly terrible). It's really sad since this was one of my favorite all time series. But I'm still gonna finish it (book 10 was sooooo boring though).

You just explained why some people "do" find Tolkien hard to finish or "boring" at times. There are slow parts and he does strive for "beauty" in his language. Its just my own taste but I do not care at all about how "beautifully" an author writes. I want the story, the messages, and the characters. Not beauty. I don't read poetry. I don't smell roses on the side of the road. And I didn't enjoy Lord of the Rings. Although I do appreciate the conept, storyline, and contribution to fantasy. I just don't want to read the thing.

Fair enough, good points, but I have to say I feel a bit sorry for you. Roses, poetry, and lord of the rings... these are a few of my favorite things.
